Mount Vernon is a town in the Hudson Valley of New York, United States. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1784 by Loyalist refugees from British America and became part of Erie County, New York, in 1827. In 1898, Mount Vernon voted to become an independent city and it remains one today.
Mount Vernon was founded in 1785 by George Washington and his wife, Martha. The home is one of the most famous symbols of American history and it is also a National Historic Landmark. Mount Vernon has been used as a presidential retreat, military post, and as a museum. The first settlers who lived at Mount Vernon were farmers who traveled from Maryland to find land that would suitable for farming. In 1683, the Englishman Sir John Smith visited what is now Mount Vernon and he noted that there was no man living there “that I saw entire without arms or armor”. In 1785, when George Washington set out to found his own country, he chose Mount Vernon as his home because it had ample space for him to grow crops and live comfortably. Washington purchased the land from NicholasPatch in 1786. He began construction on the home in 1787 and it was completed in 1789. The building was designed by Captain Christopher Soane with input from Chief Justice Marshall of the United States Supreme Court. It took over two years to complete this important structure which served as both a residence for Washington and an office complex where he could hold court hearings and make decisions affecting America’s future. The exterior of the house features symmetrical Georgian architecture with many intricate details such as onion domes on each side of the entrance porch, bell towers at either end of the main facade, stone quoins around all corners, classical columns above entrances/exits,and elaborate entablature treatment adding much interest to an already impressive structure! The interior is just as impressive with several rooms including President's bedroom having walls that are three feet thick! On January 14th 1814 Delaware Governor Thomas McKean spectated President James K Polk's inauguration ceremony while residing at Mount Vernon; he later became president himself! This event marked one of only two occasions during George Washington's presidency where he personally attended events outside of Virginia (the other being his inauguration day). Today visitors can tour President Washington's original White House– located across Constitution Avenue from Mount Vernon– which offers amazing insight into how life worked back then! There are also several museums located within walking distance of Mtverdon including: The New York Historical Society Museum- opened in 1967 – displaying objects related to New York City history since 1500 BC; The Smithsonian Institution- open since 1913 – showing artifacts from around Earth including fossilsfrom Siberia; The Institute Of Arts And Design- opensince 1975 – exhibiting contemporary art from all over the world; And finally Oneonta Town Hall Museum-openedin 1984– displays itemsrelatedtoOneontaand its surrounding area

Mount Vernon is a historic home located at Mount Vernon, Westchester County, New York. It was built in 1786, and is a two-story, gothic Revival style frame house. The square tower has an octagonal base and is clad in heavy granite blocks. It features five stories and a hipped roof. The property includes six contributing buildings: the mansion, four servant quarters (one of which is now used as the library), a workshop/garage/ barn/smithy building, and a millrace. The millrace was built in 1827 by John Montresor for grinding corn to make flour for American markets. The estate passed through several hands until it was purchased by James Kapp of Yonkers in 1922. In 1935–36 it was sold to Estelle Ladd Wilson who later donated it to the Federal Reserve System as part of the New York City debt crisis bailout package that included other Beaux Arts mansions such as Coney Island's Roosevelt House and Madison Square Garden's Times Square Palace. In 1980–81 it was acquired by Alfred Prentice Gilman who restored it to its original condition as an open-air museum featuring displays on early American life and culture. Mount Vernon currently houses the Department of Interior's National Park Service headquarters complex adjacent to its central courtyard garden where visitors can explore exhibits about Ulysses S Grant, George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, James Kapp and various other historical figures from Mount Vernon landowner John Montresor's lifetime collection of over 350 objects including artworks dating back to 1656 when he bought his first piece of furniture from England's Nicholas de Chambray! In 1786 Mount Vernon was erected by Revolutionary War veteran Colonel Samuel Morse along with others in Westchester County as one of three presidential residences during George Washington's second term (1789-1797). As president increasingly traveled north across America he frequently inspected militias assembling at Lake Ontario or upstate New York sites like Newtown Creek near Albany harbor before returning south via Princeton Valley accompanied only by his personal bodyguard Captain Nathaniel Greene; messengers led by First Lady Martha Custis accompanying President Adams on official visits; however during Washingtons final weeks living on Mount Vernon "the Executive Mansion" became more distant from direct public scrutiny while also serving largely ceremonial functions related chiefly to his widow Martha's role outfitting White House staffs without her husband ever having seen them firsthand (Adams' private secretaries being notably absent from this stage). From late spring until autumn 1797 Mt Vernon served primarily as General Washington's hunting retreat where he would convene with top commanders for councils aboard His Majesty HM Ships Constitution & Ranger off Staten Island each Saturday evening leading up ultimately too Admiralty Board decisions concerning important matters affecting America& Co.—although some evidence suggests that GW may have even visited Royal Naval Dockyards at Deptford Harbour sometimes during this period—particularly notable were Monday morning council meetings attended thereby bypassing any need for formal legal documents issued under George II&co.'s 'Executive Privilege'?
