Mount Vernon is a small town in the heart of upstate New York, located on the north slope of Mount Vernon Mountain. In 1823, President Andrew Jackson personally ordered the construction of what is now the White House at Lafayette Park on Capitol Hill because he considered it to be "the finest structure in this part of our country." However, when Congress voted not to appropriate money for its renovation after his death in 1830, Jackson's successors turned down repeated requests for help from Mount Vernon residents who wanted their home repaired or replaced. The last major attempt at repairing or replacing Mount Vernon began in 1907 but finished only partially due to funding shortages during World War I; only then did work recommence vigorously. A new brick courthouse was completed in 1915 and renamed District Court Building No. 1 upon its opening; it served as court headquarters until 1978 when it was moved to New York's State Supreme Court building on Fifth Avenue between 42nd and 43rd Streets. In 1938–39 (during Franklin D Roosevelt's first term), extensive renovations were made to both houses of Congress—including conversion into living quarters—and they are still used today as legislative chambers. Mount Vernon is located in the town of Westchester, New York and is one of the most famous historic sites in the United States. It was originally built as a plantation by George Washington in 1792. The estate now includes more than 50 buildings and over 3,000 acres (1,500 hectares) of land. The Mount Vernon Estate was first developed as part of the original townsite which was founded by George Washington in 1792. The townsite was named for his home at Mount Vernon on Long Island. In 1814, the estate was purchased by General James Kieft who moved it to Westchester County so that he could be nearer to his military forces stationed in Canada. Kieft also added many important pieces to Mount Vernon including a large dining room with walls of polished marble and a floor made from white limestone from quarries on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. He also built a small library and servants’ quarters inside the mansion which are now used as apartments. Kieft died in 1829 and his widow continued to live at Mount Vernon until her death in 1857. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln visited Mount Vernon while on vacation in Maryland; during this time, he ordered new construction on the house which included an addition that is still standing today known as “Lincoln’s Room”. After Lincoln’s death, his wife Mary Todd Lincoln took over management of Mount Vernon until her death in 1927. After Mrs Lincoln’s death, her son John F Kennedy owned the property until he sold it to Alice Paul who lived there until she died in 1979. In 1981, New York State bought the property from Alice Paul for $35 million dollars making it one of its most popular tourist destinations throughout history due to its many distinctive features such as its large lawn areas where people can picnic or play ball games; its grandiose architecture; and its many historically significant items such as USS Constitution Museum (now called Fordham University) which is open every day except Mondays since 1923 when it closed because it had been designated a National Historic Landmark).
