Mount Kisco was a small, unincorporated community in Erie County, New York, located on the border of Schuyler and Wayne counties. It is now a ghost town and census-designated place. The community had a post office from 1857 to 1957. The first settlers in Mount Kisco were the Herring brothers who built a cabin on North Hill in 1857. They named their settlement after the peak of Mount Kisco in upstate New York where they had been hunting for deer earlier that year. The Herring brothers paid $2 per acre (0.50 pesos) for the land which became Mount Kisco Township. In 1865, John Fenton acquired 640 acres (249 hectares) of land in what is now MountKisco Township from Ebenezer Shepard for $10 per acre (0.75 pesos). This made him one of the first developers within MountKisco Township itself. In 1870 he also purchased 160 acres (60 hectares) of land from James Crouse for $2 per acre (0.25 pesos). He named his new development "Fentonville" after himself and his father-in-law, Ebenezer Fenton Jr., who had helped him finance the purchase originally. Fentonville quickly grew into one of the most important towns along Buffalo Creek within Erie County due to its location at the intersection of two major roads: One led north to Buffalo and Utica while the other led south to Canandaigua and Rochester. The economy around Football season was very beneficial because many people would come down during that time to watch games being played at Niagara Falls or even further away at Lake Ontario’s Kingston area which was then known as Fort Niagara Lockport or simply as Kingston Heights because it housed so many commercial buildings such as stores, hotels and residences all close together like this until about 1910 when it slowly started becoming less socialized due to Prohibition which caused businessowners throughout New York State to close their doors etc.. In 1898, during World War 1, General William Tecumseh Sherman's army invaded New York from Canada and took possession of Mount Kisco. The following year, as part of an agreement with Russia resulting from that war, the United States donated 264 acres (100 hectares) of land to Russia on Mount Kisco for military use only. That parcel is now known as Fort Monroe National Monument. Today, Mount Kisco is a popular tourist destination for those who appreciate its unique landscape and history. There are several attractions located within the town itself - including two museums - as well as access to a number of hiking trails that lead up to nearby peaks such as Islip Mountain or Bennett Island.
