The Dutch also visited in 1624, but they did not find any mines or valuable resources there. In 1764, a fur trader named Pieter de Veth discovered coal and gold deposits near Mount Kisco while exploring for new land between Buffalo and Niagara Falls. This led to the beginning of mining operations in Mount Kisco by the Dutch and British empires. In 1814, when America became an independent country, Mount Kisco was added to Erie County, New York as part of that state's western boundary with Ontario Province. The first post office opened in 1815 at what is now known as corner store #2 on Main Street (later renamed Smith Road). Mount Kisco is a small, isolated mountain located in Greene County, New York. The peak of the mountain stands at 6,815 feet and has an altitude of just over 1,000 feet above mean sea level. The peak was first mentioned in 1614 when French traders reported seeing a large rock on the summit that was too large to be moved by horses or dogs. The name Mount Kisco comes from the Mohawk word kiski meaning "big rock." The first Europeans to visit Mount Kisco were those who traveled through Greene County in 1614. At that time, the mountain was known as Holy Rocks because it lay between two major Native American settlements – One at Cayuga and One at Seneca. European traders traveling through Greene County noted that there was a big rock on the summit of Mount Kisco which they believed to be too large for men or dogs to move. Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano reached the peak on September 3rd 1524 while journeying down the Erie Canal. He named the peak after his friend Nicholas-Jacques de Montresor who had given him advice about exploring North America before his death in 1499. In 1785, George Washington visited Mount Kisco while campaigning against British forces in New York State. At that time, many of New York's high mountains were still virgin forests and not easily accessible due to their difficult terrain and steep hillsides. Washington's tour included stops at other nearby peaks such as West Hills (2,812 feet) and East Hills (1,948 feet). Unfortunately for Washington, he did not visit Mount Kisco which would have been an excellent opportunity to see how difficult it is to climb this massive mountain! After years of exploration by climbers and hikers alike, only a few people have summited Mount Kisco since its original discovery in 1916 by Captured Officer John ``Black Jack'' McConnell during World War I efforts against Germanymansthey named it after LtColGen Jameson Kilpatrick (1857-1921), Commandant of Canadian Forces Mountain Troops during both World Wars., later High Commissioner for Canada with responsibility for Dominion troops stationed overseas
