In 1836, Samuel Colt began manufacturing pistols at his Colts Armory in Mount Kisco. His handguns were initially known as "Colt's Army Pistols." This type of revolver would be used by law enforcement officers until 1966 when they replaced it with the Glock handgun model series. In 1892, John Browning started manufacturing shotguns in nearby Newtown Square, Connecticut. He named his company after himself - Browning & Richards Arms Company - and produced pump shotguns (including models such as the famous .30-06), rifles (including models such as the Model 1903) and handguns (such as the Police Positive). These guns would become well-known around the world for their accuracy and firepower. In 1820, an express road connecting New York City and Buffalo ran through the town and by 1830, there were also wagon roads connecting Mount Kisco with Albany and Yonkers. By 1840, there were over 1,500 residents in Mount Kisco. In 1861, due to an1849 fire that destroyed many buildings in the town center, most of the residents left for good. Despite this exodus however, mount kiscos business community continued to grow until it reached its peak during World War II when it attracted more than 10% of all manufacturing activity on Long Island. In 1962-1964 two churches were built on Main Street - First Baptist Church (1962) and Saint John's Episcopal Church (1964). In 1966-1968 two housing projects were built: "Mount Olivet" and "Wedge Park". In 1970-1972 one high school opened: Our Lady of Good Counsel School (1970). In 1992-1994 one elementary school opened: St Joseph's Catholic School (1992). In 1996-1998 two new hotels were built: One called "Hilton Garden Inn" on Nassau Boulevard between Main Street & Westchester Avenue; another called "Rockefeller Center", located at 218 Westchester Avenue between Grand Concourse & East Side Highway
