In 1764 British farmers started cultivation on what are now The Catskills while Revolutionary War General Israel Putnam built Fort Orange nearby at present-day White Plains Road junction with Route 9W making him one of only two people ever to hold both posts simultaneously—the other being George Washington at Valley Forge in 1777–78. After the war putnam sold his land back to farmers and withdrew from public life until his death in 1806; however, fortification continued until 1833 when withdrawal finally allowed for development as farming became more important than military use upon American independence from Great Britain. In 1822 Hiram Bingham opened up a quarry atpresent-day West Side Highway exit number 7A which yielded significant amounts of granite for building purposes including parts used for The Empire State Building as well as Oneonta Castle before closure due to overloading in 1924; following this closures several smaller quarries operated within easy reach such as those at Clifton Springs between 1922 and 1951 servicing eastern Queens while still producing significant quantities until they closed too due to technological advances such as high productivity lasers used today’s District Attorney offices.)
