Mount Kisco is a mountain located in Greene County, New York. It is part of the Catskills Complex and has an elevation of 4,848 feet (1,480 m). The first Europeans to visit Mount Kisco were French fur traders in the late 16th century. The name "Kisco" was derived from one of the Iroquois word meanings "a place where it snows." The mountain was first visited by English colonists in 1624 when they named it North Castle after their castle on Castle Hill in Kingston, Ontario. In 1764, General George Washington sent a detachment led by Colonel John Sullivan up the mountain to scout out possible sites for a new military post on Long Island. They discovered an abandoned Indian village on top of Mount Kisco and called it Fort Sullivan because of its resemblance to British Castles at Southampton and Portsmouth. In 1814, while surveyors were working on surveys for the Erie Canal, they found evidence that there was once a large tribe of Mohawk Indians living near present-day Utica and Syracuse. They began planning an attack against them but decided against it because they lacked artillery and war supplies. A year later, however, they learned about American forces marching through their territory and decided to launch an attack anyway. Their plan went wrong when American forces discovered them; the Mohawks retreated back into their villages. In 1817–1818 Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas Thayer explored portions of western Greene County from Baldwinsville southward including parts now within Mount Kisco town limits. His party reached what is now Slaughter Mansion Road above Stone Mountain before descending below via Mineral Springs Valley until reaching Massacre Swamp which he named North Meadow after his captain lieutenant Paul Preston Slaughter who had accompanied him during this exploration Thayer's account gives us our first idea that Mount Kico may have been prior to Castle Hill which latter name may be derived from Oneida Chief Sachem Uncaheen's words meaning "the great snowstorm". Thereafter various maps show different names given various points aroundpresent day Utica/Syracuse area - most notably Slaughter Mansion Road being changed several times between 1820s- 1830s due mainly to political lobbying by wealthy landowners who wanted access to rich mineral deposits nearby After years worth exploring & consulting with other scientists Colnett arrived at his theory that MtKisky was much older than any castles seen on Long Island — possibly even older than Western Canada! [1]He suggested renaming mt kiscosy accordingly: Catoctin Hills(Catskill),Unadilla Hills(Unadilla),Northfield(northwest corner of Syracuse) & Westfield(west side of Utica)...later eastern ridges renamed Saratoga Peninsula(Saratoga Springs), Westchester Peninsula(Westchester Heights), Albany Peninsula (Albany) & Schenectady Peninsula (Schenectady) as needed... [2] This would explain why only small minority believes that MtKiscosy is actually just a natural rock formation... some believe its true origins lie beyond our current understanding! Today many people still refer to MtKisco as "North Castle" or simply as "mountain". However this naming convention may not always reflect how everyone sees or remembers this mountain - especially if they've recently visited while looking down from high ground! Some locals still call alludes like 'aunt' or 'uncle' rather then using proper names like Northcastle or Katrineholm etc., just as long as nobody asks them directly about their views on the matter! Many residents also maintain strong ties with their ancestral homes hereabouts even if these homes are no longer within easy reach... To some extent these familial attachments are more important then official recognition given today's geopolitical landscape!

The name is derived from the Mohawk word "kisco" meaning "a point of rock." The peak was first surveyed by Israel Putnam in 1813 and he named it Mount Putnam after his father-in-law, General John Putnam. The peak was also renamed Mount Clinton during the American Civil War because Confederate General Robert E. Lee climbed to the summit to view New York City from atop the mountain. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln visited Mount Kisco and his staff stayed at the Callahan House on High Hill while they toured upstate New York. In 1912, a hydroelectric power plant was built on the east side of Mount Kisco by Niagara Falls Power Corporation. Construction began on the plant but due to high water levels caused by Florence Avalanche, it never started production. In 1951, when Interstate 95 bypassed town and replaced Route 9 with a new road around it, residents started protesting against this development as it would create more noise and traffic in their town than they wanted. A group of them formed a social club called "The Citizens' Committee for Quiet Preservation" which campaigned against construction until 1955 when state Highway Patrol Officers stopped traffic near I-95 so that work could be completed without disturbance
