In 1812–1813 Colonel John Montgomery built Fort Montgomery on high ground east of present day Mount Kisco opposite Lockport where he began construction of one of America's earliest military installations providing cover from British raids into upstate New York during the War of 1812 In 1827 Governor Palfrey ordered erection of Fort Bringhurst east off Sawmill Creek northwest of present day Mount Kisco to protect settlers coming downriver from Canada In 1830 General Nathan Bedford Forrest decided to attack Fort Bringhurst while American troops were quartered nearby at Saratoga Barracks under command of Major James Gadsden (the first American general in war) and burned most of it before withdrawing back upstream towards Albany .
