It remained an unincorporated community until 1915 when it incorporated as a village under the name "Mount Pleasant". By 1800, about eighty percent of all farmers in central New York were living on smallholdings around Lake Placid and other towns near Rochester. Farming became more important as transportation improved and new markets for produce developed along the Great Lakes region. By 1870, about seventy percent of all men working in agriculture were born outside New York City or its immediate metropolitan area. Railroads brought increased production to villages near Rochester; but trade with other parts of New England also grew rapidly due to advances in shipping methods and through new ports on Long Island and Connecticut.
