By 1830 there were over 100 mills operating in New York State; 50% were located within one mile of each other on Newark Bayou south of downtown Brooklyn; 24% were situated inland near Albany; 16% were located along the James River between Richmondtown and Kingston; while 8% were located near Buffalo or Warsaw Junction on Erie Canal routes leading into Canada). In 1847 Anthony Biddle founded Biddle Paper Mill which became one of America's largest paper manufacturers with an annual production capacity reaching $50 million by 1902 It closed its doors in 1952 However many remnants still remain today including a large paper plant building dating back to 1907 which has been converted into office space across four stories tall!

In 1847, General George Armstrong Custer and his unit of Ulysses S Grant's army attacked and destroyed the Indian village at Black Hawk Hill while pursuing retreating Sioux warriors northward through this part of New York State. This event became known as the Battle of Little Bighorn and led to many civilian deaths including those of many mountaintop residents who were sheltering atop their homes during the battle. This event also helped spur development around Mount Kisco with entrepreneurs starting businesses such as cattle ranching and lumber production over time
