Mineola is a small town in the Town of Hempstead, within Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 12,468 at the 2010 census. Mineola is located on the eastern shore of Long Island and is bordered by Manor to the north and Westchester County to the east. The first scopes were designed in Mineola by two men who were working for William Thomson and Sons Ltd., a British manufacturer of optical products. In 1876, Wm. Hutton invented an improved design which became known as the Hutton-Thomsonscope. This instrument allowed users to view distant objects with ease due to its large aperture (14 inches). It was not until 1892 that a new type of scope was developed which featured a smaller aperture (6 inches). Known as an "importance spot" scope, this instrument allowed users to see details such as stars and planets which had previously been difficult or impossible to see with larger scopes. In 1907, Averill Harriman purchased majority ownership of Wm. Hutton & Sons Ltd.. He began renovations on the company's factory in Mineola so that it could be used more efficiently for producing optics products. One of Harriman's initiatives was developing a new telescope design called the Harriman Interchangeable Telescope System (HIT), which he hoped would replace older versions of Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes used by astronomers around the world! HIT proved successful and saw production begin in 1922; however, it wasn't until 1969 that HARVARD interchangesibles finally replaced all Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes on campus! Mineola has also long been home to one of America's largest astronomical observatories: The Harvard–Smithsonian Observatory (HSO)!Located on Mount Wilson near Los Angeles – just south of Mineola – HSO offers visitors access to some amazing views including telescopic observations from Earth’s surface features like Mt Rainier and Haleakala! Additionally, there are numerous scientific instruments available for observation including three coronagraphs operational during totality tonight: NASA’s Advanced Camera for Surveys(ACS) atop Mauna Kea; ESO’s Very Large Telescope(VLT) at Paranal; and European Palomar Observatory’s COSTAR project providing high-resolution images across many different wavelengths from Taurus constellation!

The village's name comes from an ancient white lead mine near present-day Mineola Village which still produces black coal today but has been closed since 1922 due to high pollution levels caused by mining operations. In 1813, James Purdy founded a sawmill on Caton Creek just south of Mineola village; this mill became one of America's most important early cotton mills until it closed in 1830 following railroad construction through that area. Over time, many other businesses have moved into Mineola - including grocery stores ( farmacia )and pharmacies ( walmart ); professional services such as attorneys ( law firm ); transportation companies ( Amtrak ); engineering firms ( GEICO ); as well as small farmers and entrepreneurs who have made it their home over the years. It is located on the southern shore of Long Island Sound. The name "Mineola" comes from two words, "mi-nuh-lay" meaning "to make or fetch firewood" and "al-lee-uh" meaning "a place to dwell." The first settler in Mineola was Johannes deGraaf, who came over with General John Sullivan during his attack on Fort Nassau on November 3, 1776. De Graaf's family owned land near present-day Mineola Village. He sold some of his land to Pieter Bakel and Johann Reyniers for $1,000 cash. When Mineola became a town, it had three churches: one built in 1848 by Rev. John Dickinson (the current church is also called Dickinson). The second church burned down in 1861; but soon there were other churches built as well: Episcopal (1859), Methodist (1868), Lutheran (1875), Presbyterian (1880), Baptist (1900). In 1907, Mineshaft Road connecting minefields along the western edge of town with Highland Avenue was opened to traffic; this made possible easy access for people working at nearby factories and farms. In 1916, an electric light company was started here by Edith Carruths and her husband Harry Carruth with $5 million raised from area businesses and individuals. Carruths had been born in Ireland into a family that ran a bakery there until she moved to America when she was five years old; she eventually became president of Bowker Electric Light Company serving New York City until her retirement in 1984. Her son Harry Carruth Jr., who succeeded her as president emeritus of Bowker Electric Light Company, founded Southington Press Syndicate Incorporated which published newspapers such as The Suffolk County Herald from Southington until its sale to Hearst Corporation in 1997.
