The community's name comes from the small hill called "MINEOLA" or "The Hill of Mines." Mineola is located on Mohawk Lake and within sight of the Finger Lakes National Park and the Canadian Rockies. The community has a rich history dating back to its earliest days when settlers arrived in what is now Mineola from Rhode Island in 1778. They named their new settlement after their local hills – MINEOLA (translation: "The Hill of Mines") and startedmining coal near present-day Main Street and Miner Avenue. Mineola's early years were difficult as land was scarce and new mines were only developed sporadically due to competition from other towns in the area that had larger deposits of coal. However, with hard work and perseverance over time, Mineola quickly become a thriving center for mining industry in Monroe County thanks to its good access to groundwater resources, ample water supply, fertile soil and well-maintained roads. By 1900, mine production had dwindled as outdated equipment came down in price or been replaced by newer models but many diamond miners continued to operate at various sites throughout central New York until very recently according to some residents who still remember going into those old mines during quartz panning trips lasting up to three hours long! In fact one resident recalls her father taking her down into one particular mine where she would spend hours exploring every nook & cranny just like back when they used metal detectors inside these ancient shafts! 2) By 1930 much of the industry had been abandoned but several smaller companies operated until 1951 when all activity stopped due mainly to lack of demand for coal following World War II which destroyed most manufacturing plants around America including Mineola’s own textile mills! Today there are few traces remaining of either previous mining practices or early communities that sprung up around it; however there are numerous heritage Sites open for visitation such as a historic millrace running through downtown which locals use for picnics complete with live music each summertime; A replica blacksmith shop built specifically for visitors who want an idea how things used to be done back then; And plenty more street namesakes reflecting today’s unique lifestyle such as “Old Mill Road” or simply “MineolA”
