Mineola is located on a bend in the Mohawk River and it is bordered by Canandaigua on the south, Cayuga on the east, Ontario on the north, and Westerville to the west. The first settlers in Mineola were German immigrants who arrived from Prussia in 1785. They purchased land from Native Americans and began to cultivate maize and other crops. The first school was opened in 1814 by Rev. George Herkimer. In 1827, John Davenport donated land for a church and school which became St. Michaels Episcopal Church. The first post office was established in 1829 and named after Drs Peter Cooper and James Wilson (the two brothers who donated land for that purpose). A depot was built here in 1868 which served as an important connection between Utica, Nalandaigua, Syracuse, Auburn Hills and Buffalo. In 1896-97 coal mining began operations northeast of Mineola when Edwin Hirschman bought property colliding with other mines near what would become known as "Hirschmann's Hill." Coal production continued until 1916 when there were only a few smelters left in upstate New York due to technological advances brought about by World War I; mineolas primary industry until then had been agriculture mineolas population increased rapidly following World War II because of wartime manufacturing jobs brought into town from surrounding cities such as Utica or Syracuse . Mineola has a post office with ZIP code 12642 and an elevation of 633 feet (183 m). The first thing that people did in Mineola was build a cabin to live in while they waited for their land to be surveyed and patented. They also built a schoolhouse which still stands today. In 1824, John Purdy bought some land from Nicholas Davenport, who had originally settled there about 1785. This gave Purdy control over all of Mineola Creek which made him very powerful and wealthy. He also started mining coal here which helped make him even more powerful and rich than before. By 1830, he had two mines open and employed 300 miners! around this time, other people started moving into Mineola from other towns because they found out about the good farmland here and decided to settle down! By 1870, Mineola had become a popular place for farmers to come to sell their crops because of its good soil quality and easy access to transportation! During World War II many people from Oswego worked at military plants near Buffalo Niagara Falls so that we could not be bombed! When the war ended there were many jobs left empty so many young men came back home after the war to start their own businesses! Some examples are: Alcoa (now aluminum), Empire Tire & Rubber Company (now Michelin), GEICO Insurance Company (now GEICO), McCormick & Co., Incorporated (now Macy's Department Store), United Textile Machine Corporation (later American Textile Institute) etcetera etcetera etcetera... After the end of World War II most farms went bankrupt so many people moved away but mineolas stayed close by doing things like manufacturing steel products such as cookers/pots or metal cans! In 1957-1958 several residents organized themselves into what is now called "The Citizens Committee Against Coal Mining" which campaigned against coal mining in Minesolan village square across from the old schoolhouse where meetings were held monthly during those years just like today's Town Hall meeting except that then citizens could bring outside beer or wine instead of just water After years of campaigning by various organizations including "The Citizens Committee Against Coal Mining",Mineolas original Post Office opened on October 15th 1951 with 3 employees serving 3 days per week . It closed on July 26th 1978 due to low demand for mail service combined with higher postage rates being charged by local carriers .........Today only 2 stones remain standing off center front wall next door original lobby building currently used as community center

Mineola is located on the west bank of the Mohawk River, about 8 miles north-northwest of Utica. It began as a rural community until 1809 when it became a town under the new state constitution. Mineola's nickname is "the ", because so much ore was found in its hills that the area became known as "The Ore Mountain." Mineola's wealthiest citizens were also some of its most prominent political leaders during its early years. In 1868, Mineola joined Union County and changed its name to Myolandia (later Myolandia-Lafayette). In 1924, Mineola reverted to its original name and became an independent city under the new State Constitution. Today, Mineola remains an important center for mining and manufacturing activity, with many businesses based in downtown including aluminum company Alcoa and leather company Buffalo Trace
