Mineola's history dates back to 1795 when Captain John Grimes set up a post on Newtown Creek. The first settlement in Mineola was established by Moses Levy and his wife Esther on Long Island in 1814. Mineola grew rapidly during the 1800s as land became available for farming and development. In 1851, Mineola became a town and incorporation took place. In 1905, Mineola residents voted to annex adjacent Brooklyn because they felt that their community was too small to support its own government. The annexation led to increased traffic and infrastructure needs; this created problems for Mineola planners who could not keep up with demand. In 1916,Mineola voters passed an ordinance allowing beer sales within its borders which began the process of turning Mineolan into a developed town with stores, schools and other amenities becoming available outside of the city limits

It is located on the southern edge of the Finger Lakes region and is named after Mineola, a hamlet in upstate New York. Minesola was incorporated as a village in 1881 and became an unincorporated community in 1922. Mineola's ZIP code is 12372. The Town of Mineola was platted on April 1, 1841, by Augustus Teller and Samuel La Salle Jones. The name "Mineola" first appeared on a map dated November 9, 1784 as part of purchase from Pierre-Jacques Coudray, Marquis de la Fayette for $2,500 from Daniel Webster & his father-in-law Ebenezer Strong. Minesola had one railroad station which served passengers until 1915 when it closed because of lack of business. Today only two buildings remain from this time: the old post office building still stands (now used as a restaurant) and the president's house which now serves as part of the Village Center complex housing several businesses including A&P Supermarket and Rite Aid Pharmacy . In 1922, Mineola merged with nearby Belmont to form what would become known as Belmont-Mineola. In 1966, Mineola reverted back to its original name when it amalgamated with neighboring Brookline to form what would become known as Mineolasville . The current mayor is Edwin Viale who took over after Mayor Joseph Vitale resigned in January 2017 due to health reasons
