In 1886, Mineola voters passed a resolution recognizing their city's status as an important center for the agricultural production of southeastern New York State. In 1927, Mineola abandoned its small-town feel by voting to become one of four townships within Rockland County designated as "Village Towns." This designation allowed for more centralized government control over local affairs while still allowing residents much autonomy within their own municipalities. Mineola has since reverted back to its smaller-town form but continues to experience significant growth due to its location within Rockland County and access to education and employment opportunities outside of New York City
