Mineola is a small town in the Town of Hempstead, located in Nassau County, New York, United States. Mineola was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624. The original name of Mineola was North Hempstead. In 1834, Mineola became a township and was renamed Hempstead. The population of Mineola peaked at 12,000 in 1930 and has since declined modestly to 8,500. In 1955, Mineola voters approved an ordinance that banned the manufacture and sale of handguns without a license from the town's police department. This ordinance remains in effect today; however, handguns can now be bought and sold through licensed dealers only. The gun protection history of Mineola is long and varied. Gun owners have been able to protect their firearms here for over 250 years! One early owner of a gun shop in Mineola was George Washington Carver Jr., who owned the store from 1916-1922. After World War II ended, many veterans returned home with new guns and needed storage space for them- this opened up opportunities for others to own firearms as well (includingmineolan armory). From there everything went into high gear... including hosting NY SAFE indoor shooting events every year during rifle season leading up to Open House weekend each fall! And boy did we ever pack 'em out!! Over 2200 residents turned out for our annual event back then (now drawing almost 1500 entrants)!
