Mineola is a small town in the Adirondacks of New York State. It is located on the shores of Lake Ontario, about 25 miles east of Albany. The population was 5,826 at the 2010 census. Minesola was first settled in 1814 by Dutch farmers who had emigrated from Rotterdam. The name "Mineola" derived from an Indian word meaning "humble place." Mineola became a village in 1868 and again in 1903 when it merged with nearby Onondaga County to form what is now Mineola-Onondaga County. Mineola's ZIP code is 12043. The first post office opened at Mineola on November 8, 1814, and continued operation until October 10, 1918. Mineola is a town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 21, 871 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Mineola Township. The first European to call Minesola his home was Abraham Van Valkenburgh (1684-1740), a Dutch vestryman from Utrecht who came overland through what is now Westchester County in 1720 and settled on an island in the western part of the Sound, opposite Jameson's Bay. He named it Islip after one of his family members (Iselin). van Valkenburgh Manor passed down through various families until it finally went out of control and was sold by its last holder to John D'Alba in 1824. In 1846, during the American Civil War, Mineola joined Union forces as a militarily important port on Long Island Sound and helped supply Fort Wadsworth on Manhattan Beach with munitions during the Siege of Brooklyn. After Confederate General Robert Ewell's raid on Long Island in 1862 destroyed most of Fort Wadsworth's ammunition stores, Mineola became one of several towns throughout New York City that were offered government land to rebuild if they surrendered. The townspeople accepted this offer and rebuilt their homes without any Federal assistance; however, all federal land within two miles of Mineola lapsed into state hands following the war ended. After Reconstruction began in America following the Civil War, Minesola saw rapid growth due to immigrants coming to work in manufacturing jobs throughout Main Street; however housing prices escalated rapidly and many residents left for larger towns outside Orange County starting around World War II when production shifted away from munitions towards other industries such as engineering and automotive manufacturing which led to decline in prices and high crime rates until gentrification started taking hold beginning around 1990s when property values plummeted again following economic recession but has slowly rebounded since then with more people moving into town citing new opportunities available thereabouts while keeping some senior citizens who are still living here residentable provided they maintain certain properties like landscape maintenance or live close enough so children can attend school nearby while also providing some grocery store/diner accessibility for those unable or unwilling to leave because Of high property values elsewhere though much remains affordable even beyond original zoning levels
