In 1847, John Tisch replaced James Clinton as Governor of New York and decided to make Mineola his home base for political life. He founded Tisch University there and also became active in local politics. In 1869, he married Julia Chatham and moved into his later wife's house on Main Street where he lived until his death thirty years later at age ninety-six. Julia died first; John followed soon afterwards at age ninety-eight after a long and successful career as an educator and politician which spanned over three decades
