The first settler in Mineola was Nicholas J. Crocker who arrived in 1814. He and his family were followed by several others over the next few years as land became available for purchase or Donation from friends and other settlers. In 1821, John Prentice donated 400 acres (1 km²) of land to Mineola Township from Albany Township for $200 per acre ($2/ha). Mining began on this tract of land in 1824 and soon after many buildings were erected to accommodate both miners and their families: a smelter, foundry, bakery, post office and school were all built during this time frame. The first railroad reached Mineola in 1865 when it was extended to Kingston-upon-Hudson via Mineola Junction. Mineola's economic development began with its location as an important port on the Hudson River; it became one of the busiest small towns on Long Island by 1830. Manufacturing activities included tanning, cigar making and printing until around World War II when they turned towards agriculture; today there are few if any manufacturing operations remaining within town limits except for a small grocery store chain that has been operating since 1973 inside what used to be the old post office building
Mineola was platted in 1785 by Nicholas-Jacques Demarest and named for the small town of Mineola on Long Island. The first settler in Mineola was Nicholas-Jacques Demarest, who came here in 1785. In 1814, the town was renamed after Andrew Jackson, the 26th president of the United States.
