Mineola, in the town of Greece Town, is one of the oldest towns in Upstate New York. The first settlers arrived here in 1795 and began to grow maize and wheat. They also planted cotton and other crops. By 1825, the town had a population of about 450 people. Mineola was named for Nicholas-Jacques Mineola, an Italian immigrant who settled in this area in 1794. The name “Mineola” is derived from the Greek word “meneia” meaning place where corn is grown because it was once used as a location for planting cornstarch (a starch) bushes to screen out bad air quality during summer months. The first school was built here in 1824 and served grades 1-8. In 1865, Mineola became a village and incorporated as a city on November 3rd of that year by vote of its citizens. On February 4th, 1907, Mineola merged with Greece Town to form the present day municipality of Mineola/GreeceTown. Today,Mineola remains an agricultural community with many businesses including farmland operations along with some manufacturing activity such as apparel production which has increased recently due to competition from China In 2006-2007 there were several economic downturns throughout upstate New York which caused unemployment rates to increase; however after Governor Cuomo announced his plan to stimulate economic development through incentives programs like tax breaks for businesses that create new jobs statewide; business owners saw renewed hope for their communities and their economy when they received state government assurances that their taxes would not be raised if they created jobs or did business with companies located elsewhere within New York State

During World War II many mines were made and produced munitions including lead shot and high explosives; these activities continued until 1974 when all mining ended with cessation orders from our government because lead shot can cause serious health problems if ingested by humans or animals years later
