Mineola was founded in 1795 by the Fitzwilliam family. The town was named after Colonel John Mineola and his wife, Martha. Mineola was a small village until 1824 when it became a borough. The borough population increased to about 50 in 1870 but decreased to 15 in 1900. Mineola voted for New York City in 1912 and 1914.Mineola is located on the west side of Long Island, just south of the mouth of the river Thames. It has a total area of 24 square miles (71 km²).The early history of Mineola is complex and shadowy. Some accounts suggest that it may have been established as an agricultural community before becoming a manufacturing center around 1800. In 1824, however, Minesola became part of the new Borough of Queens after being annexed from Rockville Centre, which had been part of Westchester County since 1686. The population at this time was only 1125 people; however, it grew rapidly due to immigration and commercial development over the next few decades. In 1870, Mineola Borough had a population density of only 14 persons per square mile (5/km²). However, this quickly increased as new industry began to develop in central Long Island: sugar beet production began in 1872 and textile mills followed soon afterward. By 1910,Mineola’s population had reached 2100 people – more than any other municipality on Long Island! This growth continued throughout World War II as mines were closed down or converted into military installations; nevertheless, Mineola’s rate-of-growth remained high throughout most OFWI period despite these headwinds! After WW II ended there were several periods whereMineolanians experienced some hard times because many factories closed or moved out during various economic downturns through the 1970s through 1980s etcetera….. Nevertheless mineolas always bounced back with hope for better days ahead….. today we still enjoy excellent food options both locally & nationally……….and plenty Of things to do!!!!!
