It is also one of two towns (the other being Somersworth) in Sullivan County that are both officially recognized by the state of New York as municipalities with full legal authority to levy taxes and regulate internal affairs within their boundaries. Minesola's history dates back to 1795 when Nicholas-Jacques Morin founded a small trading post on Mineola Island in what is now known as Mineola Beach. The community was first named "Fishkill" because of its natural resources: fishhooks were used to procure salt water for fishing from nearby shoals of Eckman Reef. In 1827, John Morse opened a store on Main Street in Mineola and soon became an important player in early local commerce. In 1829, he married Sarah Fenton and they moved into what is now called the Morse House on Main Street. The house still stands today and has been used as a museum since 1955. In 1836, Daniel Webster bought land at present-day Harbor Front Parkway for $1 million dollars which he later used to build his presidential estate at White Plains Road and Park Avenue
