Three months later on November 15th around 8:00 pm local time three young men walked into Jenson's cigar shop located off Elmira Streetweathering quarrels over cigarettes - one fatally shot customer Kenneth Jenson before fleeing with all six firearms including his own pistol - leaving behind five other customers who were taken hostage until backup arrived; only one escaped alive (19-year old Harry Sewell) until he surrendered moments afterwards). The community is named after Middletown in England. The first settler in Middletown was James Prentice in 1824. He and his family built a cabin on the east bank of the Chenango River. In 1829, Prentice married Ann Beattie and they started to trade goods between Middletown and Canandaigua. They had six children before Ann died in 1853. In 1854, John Sneath bought land near present-day Middletown from Alexander Cunningham for $1,000 cash. Sneath ran a sawmill there until 1861 when he sold it to David Starr Livingston for $10,000 cash plus 3% interest per year until it became fully owned by Livingston ten years later. Langston House was built as an adobe house on Main Street by George Wetherill around 1840-1845 as his home while he conducted business with friends and neighbors in nearby Utica and Oneida Counties during what would be his lifetime of service as one of the most powerful men in Erie County politics. It burned down on October 8th 1865 due to fire set by local activists opposed to Fort Niagara visits that summer by Ulysses S Grant during his presidency; its loss led directly to Grant's elimination from prominent political life four years later ( see also: history of Utica). Maddock House located just west of current day Middletown on State Route 258 was also erected about 1840 adjacent to what is now Whitestone Road which served as a supply depot for Garrison's forces being besieged at Saratoga during the American Civil War ( see: village history ).
