It was a small village situated on the north shore of Long Island Sound and its residents relied primarily on subsistence agriculture and hunting for their food. In 1882, an individual by the name of John Cushing made his first gun purchase in Middletown. Cushing was curious about firearms and decided to try out his new acquisition at a local shooting range. After practicing with his new weapon at the range, Cushing felt confident enough to sell hisgun to another individual in town for $40. Over time, more people in Middletown began purchasing firearms for themselves. By 1888, there were at least six guns available for sale in the village center. The availability of firearms allowed civilians to protect themselves from bandits and other threats during peacetime while also allowing them to venture out into broader areas if needed during times of war or insurrection. The following year saw another significant expansion within the community when Captain George Armstrong donated land adjacent to Middletown's common square which became known as Armstrong's Field after him. This field would be home to a number of local rifle ranges as well as a number of public events including military meetings and fairs that attracted attention from neighboring villages both east and west of Long Island Sound

It is part of the Yonkers–New Rochelle, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1827, the town of Purchase was established east of present-day Middletown with rights to land grants from John D’Angeline. In 1847, the towns of Purchase and White Plains were combined into one municipality called Purchase-White Plains. The town charter was granted on April 1, 1847 which resulted in an increase of population to 10 residents per square mile due to growth in neighboring municipalities. Middletown lost its borough status on February 14th, 1898 when it merged with Parkchester Village to form Yonkers Village Consolidated School District No. 316 which included all villages within that school district as well as several unincorporated communities including Watertown and Southamptonburghsville within purchase township boundaries which became part of Yonkers village after merging with it administratively. In 1955, the school district disbanded when it merged with other districts within new county government; however the name “Yonkers Village” still remains attached to some parts of that community including those formerly within purchase township boundaries surrounding Yonkers village proper while others have become part of new Hyde Park or Westchester County suburbs since then primarily because they are near larger population centers like New Rochelle or Buffalo
