At the time, the city was home to several businesses that specialized in the sale and installation of photographic equipment, including a photographer named John Ladd who had his own darkroom on First Street. In 1892, Mr. Ladd's son-in-law, George Geyer, opened a business called The Camera Store on Second Avenue that sold various types of cameras and other photo equipment. From here, things began to grow slowly but surely. In 1915, The Camera Store became The Photo Shop and soon after that, The Photo Supply Company was founded by J.P. Morse (later known as Gordon & Morse). In the early 1920s, another familyowned business called The Camera Shop moved into an upstairs space at 515 Main Street in Middletown and continued to sell photography supplies until 1945 when it closed its doors for good due to World War II interruptions. However, during those years there were also several other small businesses that bought property around First Street and started selling gear from their storefronts: A Telephone Service Provider (1926), Electrician (1928), Bicycle Shop (1929), Mrs.'s Nursery School (1930), flower shop (1931), post office (1932) and finally a hair salon (1945). It wasn't until 1954 when Teds Hardware store first opened its doors at 601 Main Street which would later become known as G&M Photography Supplies! In 1957 G&M Photography Supplies merged with American Cameras Incorporated creating what is now known as American Optics Corporation! With this merger came new opportunities for expansion; starting with opening additional stores throughout New York State in 1959-1960 followed by opening stores outside of New York City in 1962-1964! Over time American Optics has grown into one of the largest optics retailers in North America with over 1,000 locations across 30 states! Middletown, New York is a small town located in the Catskills region of upstate New York. The population was 3,814 at the 2010 census. Middletown is known for its tourist attractions and narrow streets. It is also home to one of the state's two high schools, Middletown High School and Throop High School. Middletown was founded in 1784 by John Montresor and his brother-in-law Nicholas Roosevelt as a trading post on the Mohawk River. The name derived from "Mido" (a place near Utica) because there was no other settlement called Midleton nearby at that time. In 1837, Montresor donated land to form what became Middletown village and named it after him. He died in 1853 and bequeathed his estate to his son Robert Livingston Montresor III, who sold it to James Duryea in 1870. Duryea built a series of stores, including one now known as Duryea’s Department Store, on Main Street between State Street and Union Avenue in 1872-1873. In 1906, the Village of Middletown merged with Throop Township to form Middletown Township." The first white settler in MiddletOWN was Nicholas Roosevelt who arrived here with ten others from Albany on October 6th 1683 aboard the ship "Labrador". After landing they erected their fortification which still stands today just off Main Street cornering Union Avenue east of State Street
