Middletown was a small town in upstate New York, located about 20 miles east of Rochester on the Seneca River. The community was founded in 1825 by the original proprietors of the extensive and valuable Indian land grants called Middletown Township. The name "Middletown" is derived from the Dutch word "midden," meaning middle or center. In 1827, Middletown's boundary was increased to include what is now Angola and East Aurora townships. The first post office at Middletown opened in 1827, and it continued to service the community until 1865 when it became part of Geneva. In 1875, Middletown incorporated as a city under state law. At that time, its population numbered just over 100 people. By 1920, however, Middletown had shrunk to just 17 residents due to heavy industry and loss of jobs in nearby Rochester; its last post office closed in 1924. Today only a few foundations remain evidence of past activity at MiddletOWN- most notably an early Methodist church built in 1840 which still stands today and houses an exhibit tracing the history of that denomination throughout New York State; as well as two cemeteries dating back to pre-Revolutionary times- one for local farmers (1860) and one for Revolutionary troops (1776).
