When the town of Middletown was founded in 1835, it was located on the southern border of what is now New York City. The town’s founder, Isaac Goodrich, purchased a piece of land in what is now the Bronx and began to build a small settlement. In 1837, Goodrich donated his land to the State of New York for use as a military reservation. This area became known as Fort George on Long Island. In 1846, Colonel James Wilkinson donated 6000 acres (2 km²) of land to Middletown for use as a rifle range. This area became known as the Wilkinson Rifle Range. In 1860, Colonel John Cushing gave another 2500 acres (10 km²) to Middletown for use as an agricultural colony. This area became known as the Cushing Colony. In 1874, Mayor John Hylan placed an order for 100 rifles from Brown & Wesson Company of London. The rifle order was cancelled because there were not enough firearms available in America at that time. However, this did not stop Mayor Hylan from purchasing 10 rifles from Brown & Wesson Company himself two years later when he needed them for his personal protection during his term as mayor. On October 5th, 1896, President McKinley signed into law the Gun Control Act which made it illegal to possess any firearm without a license from a state or local government officer or with written consent from an owner who had been registered with that organization since before January 1st., 1898

One of MiddletOWN's most popular tourist attractions is its reconstructed only village from 1693 -1696 known as "The Dutch Village". This small replica features typical Dutch architecture including groceries stores (now closed), a bakery/diner restaurant (closed), an inn (now barracks), a library/theater complex (opened), a watermill ("Waterworks" now used for housing) and several homes associated with early settlers such as Nicholas Colgan (#5 & #6). Tours are available during daylight hours or by arrangement with local tour companies operating out of various business locations throughout downtown Middleton
