In 1835, Middletown was a small town in upstate New York. It was located on the east side of Kingston Lake and had a population of only around 100 people. In the early 1840s, gun swivels were invented by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. They were an improvement on traditional firearms that allowed users to rotate the barrel so that it pointed in any direction. Middletown became one of the first places in America to widely use gun swivels, which helped make it a popular tourist destination forGunsmiths and Firearmsmiths alike.
Middletown is a small town in the Hudson Valley of New York, United States. The population was 5,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Troy, New York–Newark, NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has been inhabited by humans since before European settlement and is one of only two towns in the United States with a full name that began as an English place name (the other being West Egg). Middletown's first settler was John Winthrop in 1624. The town's namesake comes from a vision experienced by Andrew Jackson during his campaign for president in 1828: while standing on high ground overlooking Middletown Lake, he saw "a very reasonable store of houses and plantations" spread out below him on both sides of the lake. This inspired him to nominate Middletown as his hometown during his candidacy for president that year. Middletown became an incorporated village on April 17, 1834, when it joined the larger Troy Township formed from portions of four other villages: Beacon Falls (renamed after its merger), Bolton Landing (renamed after its merger with Norwich), Southwick and Northwick (renamed after their mergers with White Plains), and White Plains Junction (renamed after its merger with West Egg). At this time, it had a population of 1,500 people. On October 25, 1850, Townshendsville Annexation happened when parts of neighboring White Plains Township were annexed into Middletown; this made MiddletOWN'S total population 801 residents as opposed to 501 residents inTownshendsville alone. Despite this increase in size there wasn't much change until 1912 when voters approved annexing Eastchester County into the municipality making it 905 residents instead of 601 residents due to lack of land available within town limits! In 1924-1925 an effort was made to rename all but two streets in town – Main Street and Pleasant Avenue – which led to some controversy because many people felt that these names were too similar to those used by other towns within the township such as Beacon Falls or Bolton Landing - which had become known as "The Big Three". Ultimately though most agreed upon renaming only one street per village: Anthony Street became renamed Josephine Avenue following community outcry over another name suggested for Anthony Road – Amherst Road – which would have been too similar to Amherstburg acrossriver! In 1951-1952 vote went against adding Eastchester County onto MiddletOWN'S municipal map so that all citizens would be treated equally regardless of county residency; however voting did take place on May 12th 1952 resulting in annexation by Rockland County! The first European settlers in what is now Middletown were German Protestants who arrived from Frankfurt am Main in 1694. In 1786, when Albany County was formed from part of Seneca County, The Three Towns became one of its two towns within that county. After the American Revolution, many Loyalists moved to Middletown including General James Clinton who served as its mayor for two terms before his death in 1797. Many more Germans followed him into exile as well as others who had sided with the British during the war. In 1814, when Niagara County was created from part of Erie County, The Three Towns became one of its four towns within that county. That year saw great changes for Middletown; it acquired a post office and began to grow rapidly with new development surrounding its schools and churches. The town of Middletown, New York was founded in 1788 by Captain Nathaniel Greene. The first store opened in the community on Main Street in 1789. In 1807, the town became a part of Clinton County. In 1845, it became a part of Onondaga County. Middletown is located at 47°27′N 12°57′W.
