The Dutch name for this location was likely derived from a Native American term meaning “headwaters of the Mahoning River.” Middletown grew rapidly during the 18th century, thanks to its strategic location between two major trade routes. Not only did it provide opportunities for commerce, but it also became a popular stop for travelers heading westward into Canada. This allowed Middletown to become one of the most important towns in upstate New York by the end of the century. Middletown, New York is a small town in upstate New York, located about 20 miles northwest of Syracuse. The population was 3,219 at the 2010 census. Middletown is one of the oldest towns in Upstate New York and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 350 years. In 1814, Middletown became the capital of what would become Ontario County. The first settler in Middletown was Nicholas Pomponius, who arrived in 1764. Pomponius and his family were followed by John Morse and his family in 1768. Prior to 1800, most of the land within present-day Middletown was swampy and unusable for farming or ranching because of its lack of hills or valleys. However, the Township of Commerce acquired additional land from Albany County via Purchase on November 12th, 1800 after surveys had been completed following a campaign led by Nathan Lyon under Sheriff David Nevins! In 1814, when Canada gained independence from Great Britain, Middletown became the capital city due to its position as an important transportation hub between Toronto and Buffalo and its location on both sides of Niagara River which connected these two largest cities in North America! After years of growth thanks to industry such as tanning (the first tannery being built here), agriculture (growing corn and other crops) began to take off during the early 19th century with many new homes being erected along Main Street including those dating back to 1801! During this time there were several major floods that destroyed entire parts of town including brick buildings that still stand today; all but one home lost their roof during a flood event on April 6th 1855 known as “The Catastrophe” which left 1123 people homeless! The only building not damaged was Old Town Hall which still stands today adjacent to lunch counters serving local farmers since 1935! On July 4th 1861 – just three weeks after slavery ended throughout much of North America – Free Soil Party candidate Abraham Lincoln delivered his acceptance speech from Fort Erie Frontier station where he had been campaigning prior to inauguration day giving voice to thousands gathered there chanting “Equality Of Man And Woman”! This event also marks what would be called “Middlesex Heights” due east across Erie Canal towards Rochester where Lincoln took an unknown trainride down memory lane daily before arriving at Union Station forhis inauguration ceremony later that evening! Middletown experienced some great changes during this time with industries moving out while residents & businesses transitioned into new styles such as Italianate architecture becoming popular through schools like Trinity Seminary while barber shops closed & replaced with dry goods stores beginning around 1915 Several notable immigrants who made their mark include: Drs. John Crouse (1839-1911), Jacob Kapp (1847-1925) & Julius Rosenwald (1863-1945). Many smaller businesses continued until recently such as Black Jack Saloon which remains open today; it served local farmers until Prohibition started bringing business elsewhere starting in 1919 . Although not mentioned specifically it should also be noted that banks like First National Bank moved out West leaving behind a legacy Armenian community bank that continues operations currently
Middletown was founded in 1795 by Nicholas de Langsdorf and his wife Catharine. It became a borough on April 14, 1834. The borough was merged with the City of New York on February 1, 1898.
