However, with the cessation of hostilities following World War II and a decrease in demand for manufactured goods caused by technological advancements such as television and jet travel., Middletown's economy collapsed began gradually losing jobs throughout the mid-20th century while government assistance kept it afloat through aid programs like housing rehabilitation grants and social welfare programs which were introduced during this time period . The only economic development that occurred outside of military veterans or parts thereof came about when entrepreneurs purchased land east of Route 9A between Bedford Road and Railroad Street which they renamed "Middlesex" after their home state - Massachusetts . When traffic congestion made this too difficult to operate as a retail center , they turned it into a public park named after them In recent years there has been some resurgence around these properties including new homes being built onsite as well as restoring much lost historic detail

The most recent incarnation of Middletown began to emerge in the early 21st century as an affluent enclave for wealthy retirees located on a large piece of property that straddles Route 9 north and south in central Middletown.
