Middletown became one of the original towns in Erie County when it was created in 1814 out of portions of Seneca Township and Canandaigua Township. In 1831, Middletown voted to annex part of Seneca Falls which formed the Village of Niagara Falls; this annexation gave Middletown control over much water that flowed through its borders intoNiagara Falls proper. The falls have been a major tourist attraction for many years and continue to be so today despite being mostly managed by local government entities such as the village and State University at Buffalo ( SUNY). Middletown has a rich history dating back to its founding as a small community founded by General George Washington in 1792 during his military campaigns against Native Americans along what are now known as Route 9W & US 6 south from Kingston on Ontario Creek on what is now rural Albany County side near modern day Fort Erie while also extending eastward along present day route 10 west from old fort Erie to where current day US 12 crosses over Canada Road just north of Middletown limits with only some remnant woods left today between Rte 9W & US 12 across Canada Road with rights-of-way purchased back then by Buffalo Landowners Association prior to opening up parts west side off RR right next to Indian Lock Golf Course next door) In those early days there were few homes or buildings if any at all even though Lots were valued at $2 per acre including WIDows lot which then increased rapidly especially after John Reed opened first grist mill here about 1800AD it soon became an important stop on stagecoach routes running thru this area helping connect NYtown with points further north like Schenectady & Auburn NY leading up into Montreal Quebec etc...
