On November 4, 1792, a group of men from Middletown and its surrounding villages came together to try to fix a rifle that had been shot off balance. To their dismay, they discovered that the muzzle could not be tightened enough to prevent it from firing again. They went back to their homes and began to make small changes to the rifle until they found an idea that would work: using a piece of wood as a choke! The next day, they took their new choke device back to town and put it into use on their rifles. Afterward, baseball followed with the founding of the independent Washington Senators baseball club in 1960. In 1966, open-air skiing began operations on nearby White Mountain Lake under management by lawyer Harry Snyder who would go on to become one of America's most respected ski entrepreneurs

Middletown, New York is a town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 9,589 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse–Newburgh, NY-NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Middletown was first settled by Dutch settlers in 1624. The community became known as Orangeburg after Colonel John Orange of Ulster County (Ireland) donated land to the fledgling community in 1857. Middletown's first post office opened in 1821 and its first settler, David Purdy, arrived in 1825. In 1827 the name changed to Middletown after General Israel Putnam's headquarters were located there for two years during the American Revolutionary War. Middletown developed into a small town with three stores and a schoolhouse before it became an agricultural center due to its fertile soil and close proximity to other villages such as Orangeburg and Kingston on Long Island Sound. A sawmill operated in Middletown from 1836 until 1865 when it was replaced by a flour mill which continued operation until 1984. In 1870 MiddletOWN had 5 churches with over 1,500 members; however this number decreased significantly by 1910 when only 2 churches remained open while 3 others closed due to poor attendance or lack of funding. By 1930 only 1 church remained open while all other denominations either consolidated or left Middletown altogether during that decade. However since 1990 through hard work by local citizens many new religious facilities have reopened including First Baptist Church (opened in 2006), Second Presbyterian Church (opened in 2009), Lutheran Zion Lutheran Church (opened in 2013), and Sacred Heart Catholic Apostolate of North America (opened in 2016). Additionally several businesses have reopened including KFC & Pizza Place(1996), TCBY(2006), Wegmans Supermarket(2007), Post office(2008) and Bicentennial Park(2010). During World War II much of what is now MiddletOWN was destroyed bybombing raids although some buildings still remain today like Purdy House which served as barracks for local military personnel during World War II along with 3 airfields used for training pilots during that time period: Whitestone Airfield (1944-1945), North Beach Airfield (1946-1948) and ManhassetAirfield (#1 1945-1949).
