Middletown, New York is a small town located in upstate New York. The population was 5,851 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mohawk County and lies on the southern border of Erie County. Middletown straddles the line between rural and urban areas with a mix of farming and manufacturing businesses. The community had a total economic output of $2 billion in 2009 according to Forbes magazine. Middletown was first settled by Dutch farmers in 1736 who named it "Middenburgh". In 1824, landowner John Fenton purchased 1,000 acres (400 hectares) east of Middletown from Nicholas Schermerhorn for $100 per acre. He began to build what would become known as the "Fenton Manor" area which included a large millrace and gristmill, two churches and four schools. By 1830, over 100 residents lived in Fenton Manor including Mayor John Purdy who served for many years before moving to Buffalo in 1841. In 1847, after boundary changes within Erie County caused increased development along Lake Ontario to occur north of Middletown, Richard Yates decided to move his tannery from Canandaigua into what is now Middletown Township when he acquired 640 acres (240 hectares). Yates became one of the most influential men in early Middletown; he donated land for a schoolhouse, platting out streets and building homes around his tannery until his death in 1896 at age 87. With its rich history comes an abundance of artifacts that can be seen at various sites throughout town such as Fenton Manor's library where items dating back to 1685 are on display including leather gloves used by Dutch settlers during their trip down river from Albany; Yates' bedstead with its intricately carved wood elements still inside today; several historic houses on Park Avenue between Third Street and Fourth Street; as well as three churches – First Presbyterian Church on Third Street near Center Road (now part of Interstate 95); Second Presbyterian Church at Seventh Avenue North near Centre Road (nowpartway between I-95 & US-10); all were built c1850s or earlier – evidence that this small town experienced rapid growth during these decades despite having no major industries other than farming until more recently due to transportation limitations unique to rural areas at that time! Middletown, New York was a small town in the Catskills region of upstate New York, located on the south side of the Mohawk River. The population was 2,622 at the 2010 census. Middletown is one of three towns in that area – the other two are West Hennepin and East Hennepin – which together form the Middletown-East Hennepin Community District. The village had its start as a small farming community in 1814, when landowner Elijah Purdy donated 5 acres (20 hectares) to be used for a Methodist chapel and school. In 1825, Jonathan Edwards began preaching there, and by 1830 it had become an influential religious center. In 1834–35, developer Amos Davenport built what is now known as "Davenport Square" on part of Purdy's land; it housed a grocery store, post office, Masonic Lodge No. 1 (later renamed Temple Beth Israel), and several dwellings for ministers and their families. In 1868–69, when Route 9 opened up through the area from Schenectady to Albany however bypassing Middletown proper, many residents abandoned their homes in favor of new villages elsewhere on the road. By 1870 only 375 people lived in Middletown proper; by 1900 its population had dwindled to just 205 people remaining after most businesses closed down or moved away during Prohibition years. In 1951–52 due to increasing traffic congestion on routes 9A and 9B through townland centrality became an issue with overzealous government officials who wanted to build high speed thru highways without considering pedestrians or local transportation options like buses or bicycles either eastward along route 9A past downtown Athol Springs or westward along route 9B past White Plains Crossing; this eventually led to physical violence between rival groups vying for control of limited access ramps leading into townland centrality which ultimately caused traffic jams throughout much of MiddletOWN until finally resolved by virtue of newly enacted state law mandating always taking into account both vehicular traffic movements as well as pedestrian movements whenever possible when making highway development decisions). Today little has changed since those days aside from dwindling populations (estimated at 350 residents in 2000) while some businesses have reopened including one restaurant which still serves dinner nightly despite having been closed for more than 25 years due primarily to lackadaisical oversight by management who no longer take pride in providing quality food service – something unheard of even 25 years ago given how much larger/more commercialized today's communities seem). On July 4th each year many locals gather around Fireplace Parkette demonstrating against any measure taken by either political party designed solely to prioritize automobiles over human needs while enjoying traditional patriotic music played live on stage surrounded by American flags emblazoned all across building fronts thereby effectively endorsing such measures rather than standing united against anything harmful)
