The guns that used these bullets were called “Conte Bullets”. They were a favorite weapon of Major General George Washington during the American Revolution. In 1836, a company named Smith & Wesson was founded in Middletown with the goal of making firearms using exclusively bullets made from lead shot. This company became one of America’s leading manufacturers of firearms and ammunition. In 1907, they merged with Winchester Ammunition Company to form Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester). In 1714, the British acquired this land from the Dutch and renamed it for George Washington as part of the Treaty of Paris which ended World War II. Middletown became a small village located on Lake Ontario about two miles east of present-day Buffalo, New York. It had a population of about 150 people in 1840. In 1851, Middletown became an incorporated town with a population of 3,000 people. It remained an unincorporated village until 1959 when it became part of the city of Buffalo. In 1961, Buffalo annexed Middletown making it one municipality within that city limits. Middletown has experienced significant growth over its centuries including a rapid increase in population starting around 1830 with 2 residents per household living within 30 blocks (now within one mile) of each other. This growth continued through 1860 when there were only 10 households within three blocks and by 1870 there were more than 50 households per block serviceable by horse and buggy or foot only! During this time period real estate prices escalated rapidly as much needed housing was not available on opened strips such as Erie Boulevard or Main Street running through town center making single family homes very rarefied exceptions while commercial areas flourished with factories opening up along Erie Boulevard during this time period becoming known as "The Avenue". Today we continue to experience high levels of density due to our recent annexation into Buffalo but enjoy excellent public transportation options allowing us easy access to most places we want to go without having to drive
Middletown is a small town in Cayuga County, New York, United States. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. Middletown is part of the Syracuse–Auburn–Newburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the southern border of Cayuga County and on the east side of Seneca Lake. The first Europeans to visit Middletown were Christopher Columbus and his crew who landed here on November 13, 1492 during his third voyage of exploration for Spain. After landing they built a small cabin here which still stands today as a reminder of their stay. In 1807 John Stephenson founded what would become Stephenson's Lumberyard in Middletown as an armory for the Erie Canal Company. This lumberyard was responsible for building many famous structures such as Niagara Falls and Central Park in New York City. In 1825-26 he also built an addition to this lumberyard which became known as the State House Annex or Stephenson's Hall after him. In 1827-28 John Hylan acquired land north of Main Street in what became known as Hylan's Hill which he developed into one of the finest agricultural towns in upstate New York due to its fertile soil and well-drained streets that allowed easy access to markets throughout much of Upstate New York during those years tobacco was king! Today you can still find some remnants from Hylan’s Tobacco Manor including several brick buildings used by local farmers auctions today are taking place inside these buildings where Loyalists once held court while boycotting British goods! These days though most events related to tobacco take place elsewhere within walking distance from our old courthouse now housing apartments! Just down road another reminder of this period can be found across from “Hogan’s Alley” a busy commercial street that once served local residents grocery shopping and other needs until recently when it was closed off entirely to cars making it now home to two large stores (one occupied by Verizon)and two restaurant/cafés along with several private homes situated around it making it quite active Commercial Street again! One thing that has not changed much over time is all three sides of this street are lined with high rise apartment development!) The townspeople here went out their way during those times ( probably more so then many places back then )to maintain good relations with their neighbors just like today we try our best not too show bias against anyone no matter how we may feel about them!! Some might say that being neighborly means sticking together through thick and thin but I believe that if there ever was a time when we needed each other most everyone did just fine regardless! We have always been able to laugh despite tough times even when things got rough my wife likes to say “weathered but never worn out" because she knows we will come out fighting again someday ! Today, nearly seventy years after John Stephenson founded MiddletOWN, we continue serving up great food and drinks just like back then with our friendly staff always available if you need anything special!!!
