Middletown is an unincorporated community in Rockland County, New York, United States. It lies on the border of the towns of East Middletown and West Middletown. The population was 1,640 at the 2000 census. The first inhabitants of what is now Middletown were Native Americans who lived in settlements near where the town stands today. In 1784, English settlers arrived and built a farmstead on land that now forms part of eastbound I-87. That year, some men from Great Britain formed a company to purchase 2,500 acres (1 km²) of forest west of present-day Middletown for $2 per acre (0.8 ha). They named their new settlement "Middletown" after the market town in London they had been sent to inspect as part of their tour. In 1802, John Neely founded a grocery store and dry goods store in what is now downtown Middletown which became one of the city's most important businesses up through the years until it closed its doors in 1957. After years remaining idle due to fire danger from nearby factories and other businesses across River Street, Neely reopened his store with new glass storefronts just south of Main Street between Watertown Road and Route 9W in 1957 – becoming one of only two stores open at night remaining within walking distance by people living in Middletown during that time period. Although most businesses closed during prohibition – such as those operated by J & G Hickey – several local restaurateurs kept running profitable businesses like Joe's Cafe until prohibition ended. Post-prohibition business activity has included both retail and office space currently occupied by various types of enterprises including 3M Corporation’s headquarters building which opened its doors on Main Street adjacent to Neely’s Store on November 5th, 1990; TCBY Frozen Yogurt being located across from Third World Pizza since 1984; KFC restaurant having been open since 1951 next door to J & G Hickey's; Dave’s Sporting Goods store opening early summer 2009 inside former Brescia Elementary School also known locally as “the high school”; Wawa convenience store having been open since 1978 inside old post office building before moving out into its current location across from Subway sandwich shop - Rush Limbaugh announced his show would be held at Wawa shortly after it opened operations - all these businesses are very much still operational today despite facing increasing competition from newer establishments over time due primarily to development along I-87 corridor northward throughoutRockland County
Middletown was a small Industrial town in upstate New York, located about 30 miles east of Albany. It is now an unincorporated community in the town of Oneonta. Middletown was founded in 1810 by Nicholas Middletown and his family as a small farming community during the early days of the United States. The first permanent settler in what is now Middletown was George Prentice, who arrived in 1812. In 1814, Nicholas' son John married Anna Maria Schuyler and their families moved to Middletown from Scotia, New York. The young couple started a large farm that soon produced crops and livestock for local sale and export. In 1828, John Prentice died at age 44 after a long illness which left his wife and two young children with a large farm to run alone. They continued to produce crops until shortly before their death in 1840 when Anna Maria passed away also at age 44 due to tuberculosis contracted while working on the farm. After her death, the farm came through several ownership changes until it finally fell into hands of Joseph Hickey who sold it for $500 to James Waddell in 1865 following Waddell's purchase of another piece of land nearby called Cotton Hill
