It is the most populous community in New York's Ulster County and one of the fastest-growing areas in the state. Middletown is located on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's (RPI) campus and on the edge of Rensselaer Forest Preserve. The community sprang up around a post office which opened in 1892 and became known as "Middletown". A fire destroyed much of the original settlers' homes in 1898, but they rebuilt soon after. In 1952, Middletown voted to become an unincorporated village; it has since been annexed by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In 1964, residents approved becoming part of the larger city of Troy; this annexation was later repealed but not forgotten and remembrance remains with Quesnel Park – home to what used to be Middletown High School – which now serves as Troy's only high school students attend along with their main source of education - colleges or universities - while also having their own park system within its boundaries that offers events such as soccer games etc.. In 1830 the name of the town was changed to Syracuse after Syracuse had been annexed by New York City as an incorporated municipality. On February 22, 1831 the Townspeople adopted a resolution to change their name back to Middletown because they were "disappointed with the new name given them by Mayor John Auld". Middletown has always been one of primary commercial centers for central and southern Ontario counties and its position as a crossroads helped make it an important transportation hub for commerce between eastern New York State and western Pennsylvania during18th century times when those regions were connected by wagon roads through this area. The early 19th century saw economic growth thanks to shipping opportunities opened up by developing railroads across Lake Erie which linked Ohio with Buffalo and other markets east of Toronto while also opening up new trade routes down the Mohawk River corridor connecting Albany with points west including Quebec City and Montreal.
