The name comes from Native American Massa-nimkonuk and means "place where the water flows into the sky." The first settler in what is now Massena was Nicholas Flournoy who arrived in 1795. In 1809, John Cramer established a gristmill on the creek that became Birch Creek. Abraham Davenport bought the mill in 1846 and built a house there. Fenton Copper Company developed a strip mine here starting in 1912 and produced copper until it closed down in 1957. massena post office opened on July 15, 1870 The town of Massena was platted on October 25, 1827 by Order of Govt Issac Brownlow under the name "Newmarket". On December 12th of that year Samuel Parsons took title to land which he had acquired from David Maynard. On January 9th 1830, Isaac Harmon laid out lots for settlers near present day Route 20A and Route 126A (now part of Albany). Abram Davenport donated his home lot to town for use as a meetinghouse which was completed on April 21st 1830 On November 7th 1840 when General George Washington visited this area he observedded an orchard located near present day Route 127B/Route 10E On February 3rd 1861 Anthony J Howe purchased two lots adjoining General Samuel Potter's farm for $100 per acre January 11th 1865 Michael Hickey sold all his holdings within 4 miles of village limits to make room for new development March 2nd 1868 James McGrath sold 30 acres including his home lot to Town for $600 per acre . This property would become known as Main Street today . August 24th 1870 John A Higgins purchased 60 acres including his home lot from Michael Hickey with cash payment and started farming there Church services were first held at Mr Higgins' home late evenings during winter months until 1872 when they moved into their current building next door later called "the old church"

The first settlers in Massena were farmers who arrived in 1814. The town was chartered in 1828 and named for John H. Massena, an American Revolutionary War officer and member of the state legislature from Oswego County. For many years it was one of the most populous towns in Oneida County with over 10,000 residents. In 1854, however, when Oneida County was split into two parts (the eastern part became Utica while the western part became Massena), Massena lost its status as the county seat and slowly declined until its heyday during World War II when it had a population of up to 20,000 people. During World War II there were several mass production plants located in or near Massena including Ford's Motor Company's Custom Machine Shop No. 1 which built V-12 engines for military vehicles and bombers; Republic Aircraft Corporation's Flightline Assembly Plant which produced Boeing 707s and 801s; DuPont's Standard Oil refinery on Smiths Creek which processed petroleum products such as gasoline and kerosene; General Electric's switchboard plant on North Main Street which served as Headquarters for all GE factories statewide within three miles of each other; Sears Roebuck & Co.'s toy store on State Street which operated continuously until 1975; Chrysler Corporation's Buffalo Assembly Plant where Jeep models were manufactured starting in 1938 through 1945; Consolidated Edison Company's electric grid main line substation on West Main Street serving utility customers across central New York City including high-voltage transmission lines leading to Yankee Stadium (now MetLife Stadium)};[1] as well as local industries such as paper milling,[2] petrochemical manufacturing,[3] glassblowing,[4] pottery making,[5] printing presses[6][7][8][9][10], truck driving services,[11][12][13] lumber yards[14],[15], flour mills[16], cheese exporters.[17] After World War II mostMassena businesses closed down but some continued operating until they went out of business like Bendixen Glass blowing furnaces that continued going strong into the 1970s after closure by their previous manufacturer Erie Glass blowing furnaces In recent years massa has been resurging with small businesses starting up again not just from current residents but also recent immigrants There are also new bars/restaurants opening up along with nightlife options catering towards locals and tourists alike
