In 1828, John Prentice bought of land from Sir William Johnson for $1,000. He started to build a log house which he called "New Market Hall." After one year of construction, Prentice sold his land to David Fenton for $2,500 cash and two horses. In 1831, Rev Amos Davenport arrived from Canada with his family and set up residence hereabouts with six other families including those of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Augustus Chapman Jr.. After several years of hard work setting forth stores and homes on this new farmstead (Davenport's Gristmill still stands), they moved out into Amherst Township when that township was created out of Onondaga County on January 1st 1830 by an act of the State Legislature under the leadership of Governor George Canandaigua. At present day there are over 700 descendants living scattered throughout different parts of our great country-a proof that spirit never dies! Our ancestors left behind memories that guide us every day as we try to live up to their example—to be good citizens and help make our community better place where everyone can thrive… Today’s Massenaians share many common ancestry with their early settlers but also differentiate themselves through their own special talents and abilities that have made them successful in today’s world: agriculture (the Fenton family has been farmers since before 1850), commerce (the Haworthys ran a grocery store/grocery business until 1954), law enforcement (Alexander DeWitt “Deacon” Haggerty became well known as one half owner/operator of WNYP-FM radio station until his death in 2000) – even some trace back directly to Revolutionary War veterans!

During World War II most of the manufacturing jobs disappeared because war production methods changed from traditional hand-welded iron into automated processes which used cheaper materials such as aluminum and plastics.
