Massena is a small town in Upstate New York, located on the border of Erie and Niagara Counties. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The name derives from the Massena tribe of Indians who lived in and around the village for centuries before European settlement. The village began as a frontier trading post on the Buffalo River by Revolutionary War veteran and local settler Nicholas Grotius in 1784. Its growth was rapid due to an expansion of canals linked to Buffalo Creek that connected Lake Ontario with Lake Erie. By 1810, Massena had a blacksmith shop, two stores, a schoolhouse and six homes. In 1812, Gratiot built a gristmill that became one of the first mills in New York State. In 1814-1815, General Anthony Wayne built Fort Erie here to protect both settlements against Indian attacks during the War of 1812. In 1830s- 1840s, Massena's importance gradually declined as canal traffic shifted to Syracuse or Rochester; however, it regained its prominence after construction of the Erie Canal in 1847 which connected Boston with Albany via Maidenhead Junction (now part of Canandaigua). For many years into the 20th century, Massena remained an agricultural center with large crops such as wheat and corn; however, recent interests have included manufacturing (especially textiles) and light industry (manufacturing aluminum). Today's downtown area is home to several businesses including three banks: National Cash Processing Company (NCPC), First Niagara Bank & Trust Company (FNBT) and HSBC Bank America Limited Partnership Branches open since 2007 inside HSBC tower on Canandaigua Street next to Town Hall building facing Main Street; also there are three restaurants: Subway sandwich shop operated by Subway Companies LLC., Italian restaurant Pizzeria Ippolito owned by D'Angelo Pizza Incorporated opened November 10th 2009 adjacent to HSBC Tower across from RTA bus stop on Jefferson Avenue just east side from current Walmart store across from County Courthouse Square.; finally there is new clothing store JCPenney opened May 15th 2011 adjacent to Subway sandwich shop inside HSBC tower opposite bank lot used for parking now occupied by Dollar Tree
Scope spotting is the practice of identifying specific types and models of scopes by their design, features, or specifications. The practice began in the early 1800s when telescope manufacturers started to produce specialized telescopes for specific applications. This led to the development of what are now known as "scope mounts" which allowed users to attach a telescope to a wall or other support. For over a century, Massena has been an important community in the town of Union. The early settlers here were migratory farmers who replaced the exhausted and abandoned Native Americans who had homesteaded in this area. In 1848, when the state of New York was organized, Massena became one of its first towns. It rapidly grew as a result of its rich agricultural resources and its location on the main stagecoach route connecting Albany with Buffalo and New York City. Massena was also an important center for local politics because it was home to two congressional districts that voted twice each on legislation affecting New York State. In 1881, Massena became the seat of Union County government when it was created from a portion of Mohawk County. The population of Massena reached 5,000 by 1907 and continued to grow until World War II when it decreased to 2,500 due to wartime relocation. However, since then it has slowly begun to rebound with a current population of around 4,000 people. Many residents here are descended from those who founded or worked in the businesses and institutions that continue to thrive today in this small town located just west of Utica on Lake Ontario’s western shoreline. A strong history is peppered throughout these walls: memories from pioneer days; stories about Pioneer Mothers baking apple pies outside their homes while their children played inside; photos taken during prohibition-era dances at courthouse square; blacksmithing talks given by Rev. Draddy Ardiles at his garage; mass produced products sold at local stores before they started being made overseas…. alluding to what has always been here: human connection through commerce and culture
