Massena, New York is a town in Orleans County, New York, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1836 by General Israel Putnam and his wife Rachelle Putnam on land that had been annexed by Erie County from Niagara Falls. Massena's name means "the place where the stream Meade come out." The first post office was established in 1837, and the first school was built in 1841. Massena's rich agricultural soil made it an important center for trade during the 19th century; local farmers produced crops such as corn, wheat, vegetables, livestock and lumber. In 1912 Massena merged with surrounding towns to form a new municipality known as Niagara Falls–Massena-Putnam. In 1924 both municipalities were again dissolved when they were combined into one new township called Niagara Falls. In 1965 all but 2 of the original townships were disbanded when they were consolidated into newly created Nassau County; however, Massena remained part of Orleans County until its annexation into Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area in 2000. Today there are three main businesses that make up about 60% of the economy: manufacturing (eggeries, textiles), food processing (poultry processing) and tourism (flights to Niagara falls). Manufacturing has declined recently due to competition from more professionalized businesses within the area while food processing and tourism have attracted increased investment because of their potential growth rates outside of New York City or Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan areas. With over $2 billion worth of exports exported annually to different countries through local ports in Rochester and Tonawanda counties alone, massena has become an important regional center for economic development throughout Western New York State

Massena was the capital of Allegany County, New York from 1795 to 1821 and then again from 1823 to 1830. The town was named for General George Massa, who fought in the War of Independence. The first school in Massena opened in 1795. In 1830, it moved to nearby Rome. The first courthouse in Massena was built in 1821 and replaced an earlier building that had been destroyed by a fire. In 1824, the town became the seat of Allegany County government when it was created from parts of neighboring Hunterdon County. The county seat changed several times until 1958 when it moved to Sayreville, New Jersey. In 1870, the Erie Railroad began construction on a line between Buffalo and Rochester; this line would eventually be extended to Massena and become known as the "New York Central" railroad. A bridge over the Susquehanna River was built near Massena in 1903 by American Bridge Company and is still used today as part of Route 219 (New York State Route 9). This bridge also served as both a commercial center for local farmers and a crossing for numerous freight trains transporting goods throughout central New York during World War I. In 1924, the Indianola Manufacturing Company established an operations plant at what is now called Indianola Mall in downtown Massena after moving its manufacturing businesses from Syracuse, NY. This company manufactured radios, television sets, phonographs and other electronic products before being acquired by Radio Corporation International (RCI) in 1969 and ceasing operations two years later. In recent years there have been efforts made to preserve this site as part of a larger revitalization effort around downtown Massena which has included many new restaurants, bars and stores coming online over the past few years
