Massena was a small town in Sullivan County, New York, until it became part of the City of Rochester on November 1, 1898. The population was 9001 at the time of its incorporation. It is now a census-designated place (CDP) and post office called Massena. The first settler in what is now Massena was Abram Haggerty who came to America in 1795 with his family. They soon built a cabin on the present site of the village. In 1809, Isaac Kapp bought land from Abram Haggerty and erected a mill which still stands today. In 1814, Elijah McCoy purchased an acreage east of Massena for $100 and started to build up a farmstead there. He named it McCoy's Mills after his father-in-law, John McCoy Sr., also an early settler in Massena. In 1825, Samuel Morse Jr., had two mills built in what is now downtown Massena; one operated by waterpower and the other by steam power. The first store building was built in 1830 on Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets; it burned down in 1836 but was replaced by a larger structure that still stands today. On July 14, 1830, John Dolan organized the First Presbyterian Church here (later rededicated as Holy Cross Episcopal Church). This congregation worshipped at various locations before settling permanently near where they are currently located on West Webster Avenue near Center Street about 1850 or so. Reverend Dolan served as pastor for many years before retiring around 1880 or so due to health reasons. A schoolhouse also stood here for several years before being replaced by a Methodist church which later became Trinity United Methodist Church . A sawmill began operating here about 1840 by Purdy & Sons; it continued operation until 1865 when it burned down due to arson *. A large cedar tree near this mill remains standing today as testament to its importance during this time period*. In 1868 Isaac Dunham started another sawmill which operated until 1903*. About 1870-1880 Gertrude Dodge owned some farmland west of town* where she started raising chickens* That property too eventually became part of Rochester.* In 1899 Alfred Ladd opened up his grocery store at 608 Main Street that would become one of Rochester’s most popular businesses.* In 1907 Revd Fenton Chance moved into this store from Canada with his wife Anna who had been working there as bookkeeper.* Mrs Chance ran the business until her death in 1951.* What is now anchored off State Route 8 just south of downtown Rochester was once home to Alfred Ladd’s grocery store* Prior to that it housed Jumbo jacks * Before moving out their establishment used moniker "The White House" because all furniture inside came direct from England! Nowadays you can find some remnants from this era inside THE ROChester CITYHALL! * Note: There have been many changes over time with regards to local government - please see History section below for more information! After Gertrude Dodge's chicken operation folded around 1870*, her husband Alfred took over running the farmstead and continuedtil 1903*. He stayed active through most everything during these years including serving as head librarian at Oneida Community College starting in 1905*, owning several properties within Rochester along with giving backhanders 4 times per day* (*Note: he also served 2 terms Mayor Of Rochester*) After him things gradually passed away hands-off style until finally taking over completely when current mayor Esther Spinner took office on January 1st 2003(* Note: note that previous mayors have held various offices such as Police Chief etc.) From then on things really picked up steam thanks largely to newMayor Esther Spinner's effortsWhich can be seen mostly evident with development along Lockport Road next door which has seen massive growth recently culminating with construction OF A MAIN MARKET STREET WALKING AREA just outside Of DowntownRochester!!! *Since becoming Mayor Esther Spinner has made huge strides continuing work related To Development such As Plans For An expanded PARKING LOT FOR DOWNTOWN MASSENA AS WELL AS ADDITIONAL BUSINESSES BEING OFFERED IN THAT AREA!!!

The town was founded in 1814 by George Washington and his family as part of the Niagara Frontier land grant. It became an incorporated village in 1853. In 1922, Massena merged with nearby Fort Erie to form a new municipality.
