Massena is a small town in upstate New York, located about 20 miles east of Syracuse. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It has a post office with ZIP code 13361. The name of the community comes from the Massena Creek which flows through it. The first settlers in Massena were farmers who arrived around 1795. They built their homes on high ground near the creek and grew corn, potatoes, and other vegetables. In 1824, two brothers started a sawmill in town and soon began producing lumber for local buildings and furniture. A gristmill was built in 1832 and another in 1843; both operated until they were replaced by electric mills in the early 1920s. In 1902, an act was passed to create a village government for Massena; it was incorporated as a borough on March 1, 1903. The borough's first mayor was John Purdy (1862-1946). Massena is a small town in the New York State of New York, located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario. The population was 1,846 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Rochester–on-Hudson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by German settlers in 1788 and named after Massena, Italy. In 1814, it became part of Canada and was renamed to Cochrane when that country gained independence from Great Britain. The name "Massena" reverted to its original German spelling in 1881 when Canadan authorities changed it to Massena-on-Hudson following a request from the local paper editor. On July 24, 1800, General James Wilkinson's army destroyed an American force under Colonel John Campbell at Lundy's Lane near present-day Massena. This event is generally considered as the beginning of British occupation of what is now New York state. In 1802, Nicholas Nicollet started a gristmill on what is now Main Street and another mill on Whitehall Road which were two important mills in early MassENA history. In 1810/11, Alexander Macdonald built a log cabin on Little H lakeshore west of present day Main Street which still stands today as one of the most significant buildings in town (it has been gutted and rebuilt several times). After years of petitioning by various groups including traders and farmers represented by Reverend Samuel Morse (the founder of America), MacDonald's cabin got its own grant from royal charter #360 dated November 5th 1792 granting "a donation for erecting a house for public worship." On December 12th 1800 Rev Morse presented his application for building permit with Township Clerk Alfred Fenton; this building would be known as Christ Episcopal Church or First Parish Church until it burned down in 1872.— A new church was erected on this site between 1809-1812 with Rev George Stephenson designing and contractor Larkin & Stephenson construction— namely St Andrew’s Episcopal Church— later replaced by United Presbyterian Church ca 1870.— In 1862 “New Bedford” became an incorporated village within Town limits but ceased operations due to lack of voters; however “Massena” continued functioning until 1886 when incorporation into Village occurred.— Following incorporation into Village there were numerous alterations made to Town Hall such as addition of fireplaces (1886), enlargement (& restoration)of staircase (1901), alteration to clock face (1920)and finally installationof electric power ca 1923.— In 2003 Village Board voted not to annex any more towns within our boundaries so that we could continue providing services within the larger Rochester–on-Hudson area.; However because there are many other villages within our borders that may desire annexation we will continue provide services withinVillage until such time.— Since becoming an incorporated village back in 1862 there have been over 210 individual homeowner’s associations formed with over 3100 members—-massenawomenvolunteers

In 1834, Captain John Ransom founded the village of Massena on land he had grant from Queen Victoria for $5000 ().
