Massena, New York is a town in Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Otsego County. The name was derived from the Massena River. The first settler in what is now Massena was John Herriton, who arrived in 1797. He built a log cabin on the west side of the river and named it Massena after his home town of Meghanersville, Pennsylvania. In 1809 Nicholas Boudreau settled in what is now Massena and started cultivating farms around his cabin. In 1825 Ebenezer Goodrich established a post office here with mail service to all points east along the Mohawk River. By 1830 there were over fifty farmers living hereabouts; by 1840 only three remained. In 1851 Nathaniel Morse moved to this area from Utica and started growing corn on his farmstead near today's routing of I-95/I-87 exit 9B southbound (now exit 10A). After two years Morse sold his land to Cornelius Vanderbilt for $100 per acre and began various activities associated with Vanderbilt's railroad development including construction of miles of track across central New York State between Buffalo and Rochester. The townsite that would eventually become MassENA sprang up around this initial project - an isolated strip of land about five miles wide by two miles long at its peak - as people continued to move into or work on the new community throughout those years.
