Massena is a village in the town of Massena, New York, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome-New York Micropolitan Statistical Area. The Village of Massena was organized on February 15, 1814 by order of General George Washington as one of 11 villages set up in anticipation of the opening up of New York State to settlers. On July 6, 1795, a meeting was called to consider forming a school district within the Town of Massena and it was voted to establish a School Board with seven members including three residents from each household. On October 9, 1825 following an act by the state legislature that added Oswego County to New York (the county had been created on November 3, 1792), Massena became part of that county and had its own School District which continued until 1898 when it merged with Utica-Rome-New York Schools District No. 2. In 1923–24 there were efforts made by then Superintendent Aveline Jaffe to merge two other schools into what would have become the new district but those efforts failed and instead she formed her own school board which lasted until 1974 when she resigned due to budget cuts and consolidation within districts across Upstate New York). Massena is a small town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Oneonta-on-Hudson Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Massena settlers were Germans who arrived around 1795 from Königsberg, Prussia. They began to farm the area and built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. They called their settlement "Männlein" (man) because they were the only ones living there at that time. In 1802, Colonel Moses Stiles bought the land from the German settler and named it Massena after himself and his wife's paternal ancestors in Germany. He also donated an acre of land to the village for its own use as well as building a school and church in 1805. In 1810, Henry Platt founded Plattsburgh Academy which became one of New York State's best schools before moving to Rochester in 1827. In addition to education, massena had several businesses such as gristmills (1798), sawmills (1810), carriage houses (1814), pork packing plants (1816-19), flour mills (1920s) and a cheese factory until it closed in 1922 due to economic conditions during World War I while other local businesses thrived including many stores that still operate today such as JCPenney and Sears Roebuck & Co., which opened its first store here in 1915 In 1916, through Purchase Land Act 108th Congress passed by Frances Perkins (), Massena was designated as one of two townships within Oneonta Township so that villagers could have easier access to transportation infrastructure like roadsides for farming purposes without having to leave their homes or relying on animals or carts drawn by horses for goods transport between villages/townships across Ulster County . This designation made possible more efficient transportation between villages/townships making it easier for farmers to get products into town for market further down the road thereby stimulating economic development along with creating jobs for locals; this also helped Massena grow rapidly becoming known as "the most important center of industry in Ulster County". A few years later on November 15th 1920 by virtue of act 106th Congresstional ,massENA was annexed by Oneonta Township forming an officially recognized community with all powers vested therein including taxation since then residents have paid taxes amounting anywhere from $0-$5 per year depending on income level

He named the town Massena after his farm near that location. A post office was established at Massena in 1807 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1852. In 1851, the town of Massena merged with the village of Whitehall to form the new village of Massena–Whitehall. The merger resulted from a dispute over water rights between the two villages.
