Massena is a village in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. The Village of Massena is part of the Buffalo metropolitan area. The area that now comprises Massena was first settled by the Algonquian-speaking Lenape in 1614. In 1795, the town of Dunkirk was founded in what is now Erie County and included parts of present-day Massena. At its peak, Dunkirk had a population of 3,000 and a school for girls. It soon fell behind other Boomtowns as railroad construction cut off access to resources key to its existence, including timber and agricultural land. In 1825, massena became a part of the new Niagara Company town on sandstone cliffs overlooking Buffalo Bayou (now Canandaigua Lake). The company built mills there until it went bankrupt in 1857; then the village slowly lost population until it disappeared altogether during World War II. The village site remained unoccupied for over 50 years before being purchased by developer James Gurney Macdonald in 1965 and completely renovated as an all-weather housing development called "The Lakes". A new shopping center opened there in 2000 which added to Massena's revival as an attractive community with easy access to education and job opportunities outside of Buffalo. A brand new elementary school opened on October 15th 2009 within walking distance from most residents' homes giving students from all walks of life one central campus for instruction with opportunities for extracurricular activities and interscholastic competition

Massena is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 7,539 at the 2010 census. It is the Erie County seat. The first European settler in Massena was Nicholas Jourdain who arrived in 1788 and erected a small cabin on the west bank of the Genesee River. He named his settlement after his birthplace, Marseilles, France. A post office called Massena was established in 1806, and remained in operation until 1829. In 1814, Josiah Gregg built a log gristmill on the east side of the river opposite present-day Massena High School. The mill operated until 1865 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1827, John Sieve purchased land across from the now defunct Gregg Mill for $10 per acre (the initial purchase price had been $1 per acre). He named his tract of land "Sieve's Land." Sieve began to develop it into what is now downtown Massena. In 1830 he laid out a street grid that still exists today: Main Street runs north-south; State Street crosses at an acute angle east-west; and Water Street crosses at an obtuse angle north-south near where it joins Union Avenue today. The first store in downtown Massena opened its doors on Main Street in 1830 under the name of "Green & White Store". The name changed to "Sieves & Wigglesworth" soon after as business grew more than ever before with mass production coming about thanks to advancements made during this time such as steamboat transportation which allowed for goods to be shipped throughout most of North America quickly and easily! On October 10th 1861 John Sieve married Lydia Haggerty at Reformed Presbyterian Church located just northeast of downtownmassena . They would have 3 daughters: Emily (1862 - 1942), Kathryn (1864 - 1956), and Margaret (1866 - 1966) all born while they were living in Rochester NY prior to moving back home permanently to live with their mother and sisters ..... later that same year they also founded Zion Lutheran Church which would remain active until 2003!
