Massena, New York is a small town located in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. It is bordered by the towns of Rome and Kingston on the south, White Sands on the east, and Cornwall on the north. The population was 5,922 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Massena were traders for Michilimackinac Company. A post office was established here in 1836, and by 1840 there were seven families living here. In 1847 an act was passed providing for a township form of government for this area:, and in 1850 it had a total population of seventy-one people. In 1861 John Fenton purchased land here from General David Hunter, which included present day Massena proper. Fenton built a sawmill and gristmill on his property which he operated until his death in 1865. His son John Hentz followed in his father's footsteps and continued operations until 1893 when he also died leaving behind a mill complex as well as additional agricultural land across four miles (6 km) to the east that became part of what is now town of Massena. Today, much of Fenton's original infrastructure remains intact such as his mill buildings dating back to 1865–68; two large dams completed around 1915-16; contributing structures from both mills including a cooperage - currently closed - along with other early 20th century industrial relics still standing today: one still contains water pumps used during Prohibition; another has been converted into apartments.; several cribs (mansion style homes) remain from before World War II., many local schools also date back to this time including Holy Name School which opened its doors parishioners aged six through eighteen in 1912.; several businesses have also thrived over time like First National Bank (1899), Jack & Jane's Restaurant (1915), Gretsch Band instruments factory located adjacent to old school building between 1945-49.; massena gas station – founded 1924 – served residents until 1979 when it closed after being bought by ExxonMobil.. Today only an exterior wall remnant remains from original structure while interior functions are electically powered via generator
