The first European to visit Massena was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. In 1614, English traders arrived at the port of Massena after being driven out of his home country by Dutch traders. They built a trading post on what is now Main Street. The area now known as Massena was part of Albany County until 1802 when it was included in Chenango County. During the American Revolution, Massena sided with Patriots against General Washington's forces. On July 4, 1776, Patriot militia under Colonel John Darlington attacked British military forces entrenched at Saratoga Springs near present-day Buffalo while they were on their way back from that campaign. The British were successful in driving them off and capturing more than 100 men including Provincial Major John Montgomery who later became a brigadier general in the Continental army during the Revolutionary War. On November 3rd, 1794, George Washington visited Massena for a day to review troops before departure for Quebec City where he would serve as president from1797 to 1800. He stopped at the tavern on Main Street which still stands today and had dinner with local dignitaries including Judge Abraham Cushing and Mayor James Fenton before continuing on his journey westward. In 1807–8, tensions between England and America mounted over trade tariffs that were raised as part of an effort to protect Britain's commercial interests following its victory over France in the Seven Years' War (1763-1783). This led to open warfare between England and America with skirmishes taking place along both sides of Lake Champlain Valley until 1795 when hostilities ended following Britain's capitulation treaty with France effectively ending hostilities in North America despite initial French support for Canadian independence movements (see Quebec Rebellion). Canada became an integral part of Great Britain after its defeat by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1812 but this did not stop Americans from seeking opportunities to gain control over British colonies throughout North America; this process began withAdventurers such as Andrew Johnson who arrived in Albany county during this time period looking for land grants totaling some 1 million acres (4 square miles) which he hoped would become a nucleus around which new settlements could be established within limits prescribed by Congress rather than just eastward into Virginia or Pennsylvania where wealthy landowners already resided without any need for governance or development potential aside from providing carriage services/farming operations etcetera Ranching/mining operations also took root during this time period although it lacked significant infrastructure other than scattered rural homes having access only to trails leading back home due to lack of transportation options outside these areas much like present day Latrobe Township which is located about 20 minutes eastbound off I-90 Exit 366 southbound) One interesting side note about this period is that Friendship Lodge No2 bears witness thereto dating back circa 1800s
