He didn't have enough money to purchase anything necessary for himself or even buy food on occasion; instead, he relied entirely on what little money Nathan gave him each month." The situation got worse when Nathan began arresting people without warrants or making sure they knew why they were being arrested - this caused many residents of town to become terrified and suspicious of Elijah." "Elijah soon found himself living under constant surveillance by both Nathan Bedford Forrest and local officials alike."

André built a log cabin on his farmstead and named it after himself, Massena (pronounced "ma-seh-nuh"). In 1729, he married Anna Maria Trimble and began operation of his farm with his wife as tenant. In 1734, André purchased from Nicholas Stackhouse an estate on the west side of the river for $2 per acre. In 1735, Captain John Montresor took possession of what is now Upper New York Bay from Great Britain and began trading with the natives here. On July 10th, 1736, Montresor granted land to Nicholas Stackhouse for $1 per acre upon request from Joseph Garrettson II., one of Montresor's traders at that time living at Kingston over on Long Island Sound. By 1800, nearly all residents in Massena were Italian immigrants or their descendants who had come overland through what is now Vermont or Massachusetts during the Great Migration period before World War I. A few families still lived thereabouts during Prohibition years but most moved out by 1922 when prohibition ended across America. The last resident died in 1982; however some materials remain extant about old Massena including two cemeteries which are open to visitors today (www/massenate_history).

The town of Massena, New York was founded in 1795 by Colonel John Work and his wife Susannah. The town was named after Captain Massena, who had been captured by the British during the American Revolution. The first store in Massena was built on Main Street. In 1814, the town voted to incorporate as a village. In 1824, the village became a town when it merged with other villages in eastern New York. The population of Massena reached 2,500 in 1860 and 5,000 in 1920.
