Massena, New York is a small town in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany–Schenectady-Troy, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by Germans in 1795 and named after Massena, Italy. In 1825, it became part of Union County and was incorporated as a village in 1828. In 1830, it became a town and was renamed after Major General Nicholas Massena (1781-1853), who had served as United States Army general during the War of 1812 and as Governor of New York State from 1827 to 1830. The town's name change came about because at that time most people in Massena were farmers or fishermen who used their land primarily for raising livestock or growing crops. The first store opened in Massena on Decatur Street in 1830. In 1830, there were only six homes in Massena; by 1840, there were over 150 residents living within its borders. By 1860, however, the population had decreased to just 37 individuals due to migration away fromMassena for work opportunities outside of upstate New York and Ontario County within the United States itself. However, due to proper planning by local officials including Town Clerk Amos Jelliffe and Fire Marshal John Sutter - both men with experience fighting fires - massenanumber increased rapidly through immigration beginning around 1870 from Ireland , Russia , AustriaHungary (now Hungary ), Poland , Czechoslovakia (later Czech Republic ), Bulgaria (then Yugoslavia ), Canada , Mexico and other parts of North America . In 1870 alone there were 185 immigrants living inMassena; by 1880 this number had grown to 309 individuals thanks to waves of Irish American migrants following the American Civil War . During World War I , MassENA played an important role as one of two towns located between Fort Drum on Long Island Sound opposite Staten Island - homeport for both Ulysses S Grant's Navy squadron which operated out of Fort Drum Harbor while also supporting aerial bombing missions over German territory -and Scranton –the capital city –both because they housed strategic military installations such as ammunition dumps and hospital ships moored at either end of Bass Strait Bridge across Lake Erie – thus providing access to resources essential for war production far beyond what could be possible from either Scranton or Manhattan .

For instance, Massena got land rights from the Crown in 1817 and then passed an act protecting women from sexual abuse. In 1824, the town gained city status and began to make progress on many fronts. But it was not all good news for Massena. In 1828, a severe storm destroyed much of the town center and killed many people. This event leftMassena struggling financially and socialistically after centuries of success. However, locals persevered and soon regained some level of prosperity again thanks to new businesses started by newcomers such as entrepreneurs Isaac Decker and Moses Levy. In 1865, Massena became part of the newly formed (and at first unsuccessful) Borough of Amherstburg within Addison Township real estate development within Kingston County which had been organized following unification of New York state under Abraham Lincoln’s administration on November 8th,1865 from parts of five different counties including Albany, Buffalo, Canandaigua/Syracuse/Rochester etc.. Despite this geographical change little happened until about 1900 when massena school opened providing instruction for grades K-12 with each student required to participate in extracurricular activities such as sports or music
The town of Massena, New York was founded in 1795 by Captain John Armstrong. The town became a part of the United States in 1821. In 1837, Massena had a population of 714 people. The town's first post office was established in 1839. In 1865, Massena became the county seat of Onondaga County.
