In 1933 however, when Franklin D Roosevelt took office he decided that America should enter World War II on behalf of allies such as Russia so he ordered all private citizens be vaccinated against smallpox so that they could be fighting alongside their countrymen without fear of catching it or having it fall into enemy hands (Shane). This decision lead to an increase in gun protectiveness among civilians due not only to patriotism but also because smallpox is a highly contagious disease which can cause death if contracted while fighting overseas (Wade). Gunowners took precautions such as securing their homes with locks after dark and cleaning their firearms regularly; these measures helped reduce incidents where weapons were used inappropriately or accidentally during wartime (Lambert). The Town of Massena was first settled in 1795 by Loyalists from England who had fled during the American Revolution. The town name is derived from the French word "massan", meaning "to stretch out." In 1803, Massena became a village and was incorporated as a town on April 14, 1804. The town's first store opened in what is now the Main Street area on December 6, 1800. A post office was established at Massena on October 12, 1802. The first settler to reside in what is now Massena was John Richardson Sr., who arrived in 1800 and built a log cabin near present-day Park Avenue and Third Street. Richardson's cabin remains standing today and can be seen from Park Avenue. In 1814, two brothers named Moses and Solomon Farming were instrumental in getting land subdivision started around what is now eastern Onondaga County as part of their farm that they called Cutler’s tract or “Farming Place Road” which ran through present-day Massena and other townships including Scone and Unity across Frome Creek valley south to where it empties into Lake Ontario just east of Rochester into Herkimer County. This parcel later became known as the Farms; thenceforth known as Cutler’s Farmstead (later Eastman). In 1815-16 David Levy purchased about one acre (0·75 hectare) of this original Farming place road lot northeast of Massena for $2 per acre with an option to purchase more if desired; this lot eventually became Fields Landing (later Fieldsborough). David Levy laid out roads through what are now eastOnondagaCounty communities including present day Syracuse and Lockport before he moved his family there in 1830 from Utica – then still part of New York state - where he had been living since 1793 after taking up land grants given him by King George III following his victory over France at Saratoga Springs on September 17, 1777. His brother Jonathan also came overland via Canada about three weeks later aboard ship Neptune along with 140 other settlers founding Albany Township west of Niagara Falls on October 10th1788 becoming one of the earliest farmers northoftheHudson River . Massena is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. The village of Massena is also located in Erie County. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Massena in 1795 and named it after the Anishinaabe word "mascaran" meaning "to clear land." In 1818, the town was organized from part of Canandaigua Township. In 1825, the towns of Canandaigua and Massena were combined to form a new township. In 1848, part of Canandaigua Township was transferred to Massena as well. In 1861, the Railroad reached Massena and began shipping goods from Buffalo to Syracuse through here; this led to an increase in business and development in the town. On March 15, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln signed a bill creating Erie County which included parts of present-day Massena. On November 8, 1955, residents of MassENA voted 3-2 to merge with Thompsonville into that city's community services district (CSD). This merger became effective on January 1st 1956. At that time there were 2 communities within CSD: Canandaigua (of which massena was a small part) and Thompsonville (the larger part). A referendum approved by voters on November 3rd 2006 changed all municipal boundaries within CSD including those between massena andThompsonville; these changes went into effect on January 1st 2007 when CSD merged those two entities into one large municipality known as “MASSENA/THOMPSONVILLE”
